I have searched the forums and maybe I missed the answer to my question:
But from what I have read all video/audio output are active
correct:confused:
If so does the system know which video fromat to output to each of the connections?
Aka: 480i on the composite out and 1080i on the HDMI:confused:
The reason I ask is:
Currenly I have my SD DirecTIVO's connected to a whole house UHF modulated system, when my new HD-DirectDVR is received/installed and connected to my UHF system, will I be able to enjoy the full HDMI 1080i on my Widescreen and still be able to view the same program in 480i on my SD sets tuned to the correct UHF station in other rooms of the house.

I believe that Composite outputs on can only display 480i as does S-video so those are locked in that resolution. The only outputs that send out a 480p, 720p, 1080i are the component and HDMI and once you make your settings of either Natve ON or direct settings of whichever resolution.
Hope that makes sense and moreso answers your question. :)

You can connect your widescreen TV via component or HDMI and your UHF system via either composite or S-video. That will get you all available resolutions on your main TV (1080i, 720p, etc), and 480i on all of the other ones.
So I think that's a "Yes" to your question.

Yes, I do it all the time. (feed the source video, no matter what the source program hd/sd to my rf modulator and send it to other locations in the house). Of course an HD feed coming out S-Video to the modulator isn't HD any longer, but it works fine.

Yes - I am already connected that way. HDMI to HDTV and svideo to rf modulator to kitchen and spare bedroom. Works great.

I've been wondering about this as well, thanks for the input. I have Directv coming out on Thursday to install a HR20 and H20 in my home and plan on doing this exact setup on non-HD tvs.
I have a related question though. I will be setting the guide etc. to be 16:9 for use on my HDtv(s). When I view this guide on a non-hd tv and in 4:3 will alot of the guide be chopped off due to the guide formatting?

No - but SD tv will pinch letterbox so screen is not full. If wide screen is full, SD is full. If widescreen not full, sd not full

gotcha - so the guide will scale according to the content in sd. thanks.

Thanks for the many replies.. !!!!
Now I just have to wait.... From what I have been told the 'NEXT' HD channel to go 'LIVE' on DirecTV will be the 'Scifi Channel'....
