Some of you may have seen my post about 10 days ago in which I reported that I had e-mailed an executive officer at DirecTV to express my frustration at not receiving YES-HD 24/7 because I'm not in the NY DMA. He wrote back, stating that DirecTV was looking to see if they could enlarge the YESH coverage area.
I wrote to him again yesterday to ask what the status of things was, whether it was gonna happen and, if so, what the timetable was... days? weeks? July?
He responded and said it was a matter of days, not weeks or the summer. He asked me for my zip code to see if I would be in the new increased area.
I am.
I'm in upstate NY, about 20 miles southwest of Albany.
Those are the facts as I understand them at this time. From those facts I would assume, but cannot state for a fact, that those of you in NJ and CT who have expressed your frustrations regarding this issue will also have YESH 24/7 soon. It would seem that subscribers south of Albany will be getting YESH. As to whether subscribers further upstate or in western NY will be in the new increased area, I have no idea. I hope all of us who have YES as an RSN will be receiving it in HD 24/7. Time will tell.
Just thought I'd let you know what's doing.

I don't know where Elizabethtown is, and I know even less about how DTV plans to expand the coverage of YESH.
I did send an e-mail about noon asking about the Buffalo zip, but haven't received a reply. I don't want to bug this guy with any more questions. But I wouldn't give up hope simply because you're in PA. If you get YES as an RSN, there's a chance you'll get it when this happens.
We should know for sure within a few days. If I hear back about the Buffalo zip, I'll let you know what I learned. If I get a date for when this will be happening (which I was told I would be given), I will pass that along too.

I just heard back from the VP at DTV. He didn't specifically indicate whether the zip 14120 would be in the expanded area. He did say that Buffalo was included, but also said that he hopes the person who asked "lives more to the east side of the market, as the far west side is just at the edge of the new footprint."
He went on to say he "hopes" to implement this tomorrow!
If we get it, we will "see a new (and second) channel 622 on your program guide. It should have the call sign of YESH (H for HD)."
I, for one, am jumping for joy!!

The HD versions of YES and SNY are not here in Dallas on my H20 or HR20 so I guess can't be on CONUS; in any case, I don't think DirecTV has the bandwidth for two new CONUS channels (more if the other RSNs are included).
If DirecTV is really going to make these RSNs available in HD to a wider audience before DirecTV 10 launches, they probably have to uplink the channels to a few more spotbeams, something they have not done up to now. So if you are in the YES and SNY home market (outside the NYC spotbeam that already has the channels in HD), and have spotbeamed HD locals, maybe you will start seeing YES-HD and SNY-HD, even before DirecTV10 launches and they become CONUS channels.

Something tells me that with nightrider being in Canada. He aint getting YES OR SNY in HD.
I live in NEPA. YES and SNY are two of my RSN's. Will we be included in this expanded area? The NY DMA ends 15-20 miles to the east of me. My zip code is 18403.

Im not sure if the issue is a sat coverage thing, or just a DMA-definition thing. I know for a fact that you can get YESHD outside of the NY DMA....like an earlier poster said, the spot beam isnt shaped like the NY DMA :) In fact I would think it might be reasonable to believe that anyone that gets NY locals (either directly or as "significantly viewed") could get YESHD as well.
Im 3 miles away from the NY DMA, Im pretty sure I could get the signal for YES HD without D* having to change anything on their sats.

It's a DMA issue, but also tied up with the way DirecTV delivers locals. Each spotbeam delivers HD locals for a DMA, and those locals may include an HD RSN like YES. DirecTV could deliver YES-HD to multiple spotbeams, but so far has chosen not to. It sounds like they may be considering this. But if you are in the spotbeam but outside the DMA that spotbeam serves, you probably won't be able to get the HD RSN, because DirecTV isn't allowed to deliver the HD locals outside the DMA.
So if you are just outside the NYC DMA but inside the spotbeam, you would only be able to get YES-HD if you have your "own" HD locals and DirecTV decided to link YES-HD into that locals package.
It will be interesting to see how DirecTV delivers the HD RSNs but the scenario I outline is the most likely. The logic would go something like this.
Am I in the YES "home" territory? If no, wait until YES-HD becomes a national channel.
Do I have an MPEG-4 HD locals package in my city? If no, wait until YES-HD becomes a national channel.
Do I have a 5-lnb dish and an H20 receiver or HR20 DVR? If no you will not get YES-HD
If you answered "yes" to all three questions, and DirecTV decides to add YES-HD to your local HD package, you would get YES-HD.
It's only speculation, but it's the logical way for DirecTV to go if they are going to do anything before the new satellites launch.

That might prove its not necessarily the spot beam that carries it.
It might also prove the theory from a previous poster about how it will work.........D* will let certain zip codes (regardless of spot beams and DMAs) have access to YESHD/SNYHD as part of their HD locals package.
Im eager to find out if New Haven County CT will end up with YESHD, and how soon. Im pretty sure we will (3 miles from the official NY DMA designation), its just a matter of when. Id go so far as saying if D* was nice enough to make it happen, I just might try to buy another HR20.

I just received word that the work necessary to effect the expansion of YESH will not be completed today, but is expected to be completed Monday.
I was also told that tomorrow's and Sunday's games will be on channel 95, so two outta three ain't completely bad. Only one more SD game to "suffer" through (tonight against the A's).

YES HD will probably not be available on a CONUS beam until the new Ka satellite is launched. What DirecTV is likely doing here is putting it on a couple of additional spots to enlarge the footprint.
Anybody know how many RSNs are at least part time in HD? They will likely all be part of the 100 HD channels promised for this year.
A further update on this issue is that I had to call D* last night on an unrelated PPV playback problem. After resolving that (credit and scheduled for another showing - HD version of Flushed Away) I asked about YES HD. It took her some digging but in the end she thanked ME for the update. It basically was not posted in her info that YES HD would be available in the remainder of NY State markets (with the HR20) but all other indications were that it would be ready very soon.

The programming on YES isint all that special (and most of it isint in HD), and with Extra Innings you can watch every game.
I didn't realize there was a huge demand for Yankeeography.

I just talked to a tier 2 tech that told me YES hd isn't available yet in CT. I am shocked to here this.
I am curious if the same will be done for NESN or SNY?
I was curious about the same thing in regards to SNY. I called a couple of minutes ago to ask. I got an affirmative response from the first rep in regards to my being included in the widened coverage area for YES-HD at the second ch. 622, so I asked about 625 HD. She took awhile, but gave a negative on that. I asked if there was an e-mail address I could contact someone in regards to that and she said she could escalate my call.
I got transfered to Bobbi and in the middle of explaining the situation the line goes dead. I call back and explain to the rep what happened in regards to my first call and after I take the time to go through the situation, she says, "You want to take care of your bill?". WTF? I say, "I wasn't calling about my bill..." and the line goes dead again.
DirecTV, when I call with legitimate questions that aren't in the manual or on your website, I like to have them answered and not be cut off. Otherwise, what the point of having a call-in center?
How about us NYer's living in paradise? Will there be YesHD for us?;)

The YESH coverage area expansion has not been effected yet. Last e-mail I received was on Friday, which read as follows:
"We will not finish our changes today. But as I said before, the Sat and Sun games will be carried in HD, on Channel 95 or 94. We will expand the YES HD channel on Monday."
I didn't receive any e-mails yesterday, and still don't have YESH. I don't know what's doing. I didn't e-mail him yesterday, don't wanna be a pest. But I'm growing impatient and my frustration is growing exponentially with each passing day.
An aside: I was watching Sunday's game on 95 and it stopped cold in its tracks at 5:18PM, was "unavailable". Another reason I'm frustrated scrounging for Yankee games on channel 95.

I made the mistake and called D* CSR. I was told that they do not broadcast YES OR SNY in HD full time for ANYONE! ZERO help. Arrggghhhhhhh. They broadcast "some" games in HD on 94 and 95. This depends on who has priority. It could be any team.
Maybe if we all banded together and chipped in $1 /month so that they could properly train their CSRs....... Looks like SD until the end of the season.

I have been told that YESH is on satellite 99(b) transponders 5 & 9. I don't get transponder 9 and my signal strength on 5 isn't great (varies between 86 and 89). I'm having issues of my own, having a guy come out to tweak my dish's alignment. Signal strength on the other five unused (for me) transponders on satellite 99(b) is between 95 and 100 (of course LOL).
I don't have my 103 readings handy, but I know they're not good. I don't think yours is a 103 issue. Don't know what it is. Check your 99(b) readings, especially transponder 5 (and 9 if you have it).

I have 622H and 625H and they look great BTW. 1st MPEG4 Channels.
Having said that this is a reminder that you need a MPEG4 Capable box.
2nd remember that you have to go your favorites and add the channels(s) to your line-uo.
3rd if you type in 622 directly you will go to 622 SD and you need to ch up or go via the guide to get to YESH version of 622.
Lastly I agree that it may not be 99b on 5 and 9 as my pictures are great and my reading are N/a on 9 and on 5 they are 28. BTW they are 95 87 55 97 28 95 from 30 miles west of Albany.

It's not clear to me how DirecTV has achieved the delivery of YES-HD and SNY-HD into these new areas. The original thought was that they might uplink the channels into other sets of MPEG-4 locals as well as the NYC locals, but based on some of the reports it looks like they may have expanded the size of some of the spotbeams also. People in DMAs close to NYC, and those in Albany, are getting the HD RSNs even though they do not get any MPEG-4 HD locals.
If Albany is being covered by a NYC spotbeam the channels will presumably be on 99. If its an expanded Buffalo spotbeam I assume they will be on 103.

I find it hard to believe that I'm getting it near Albany and others are getting it in Buffalo, but in between isn't.
I'd call DTV (or even better, the people who did your installation) and insist that they send someone out to check the alignment of your dish.
Thanks. I called CSR today. They're sending a tech out to tweak the alignment.

That's because you are in the Springfield MA dma if I am not mistaken. The expansion seems to be Hartford and Albany dmas only.
This is working in zip code 18833, which is in Pennsylvania, south of Elmira, New York and west of Wilkes-Barre. I receive New York locals for HD.

bobo: I've been told that 14706 is near the edge of the footprint and is therefore more susceptible to the vagaries of weather. I've also been told that they'll be moving YESH to a CONUS transponder in September, which would fix your problem.
I know that's disappointing, but I'm just passing along what I've been told.

Do you think Ineedccs, you can figure out why I can't get the channels? I live in Zip 14810 (elmira/corning region). This is much closer than Buffalo, Rochester, etc. I have made countless calls to customer service and get a different answer pretty much every time. Any help, phone #, email addresses to any one other than the csr's would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, John

I am no longer in contact with the guy I was talking to at DirecTV, and wouldn't feel comfortable giving out his e-mail address, it's not my place to do so.
But that's really not all that important. I would think (but cannot state with certainty) that the Binghamton area would be covered. Assuming you have an HR20 and a 5 LNB dish and are getting poor signal strength readings for the 99(b) satellite, I would suggest the same thing I suggested to "bobo" (see above) -- call DTV and insist that they send someone out to properly align your dish. Don't ask if YESH is available, say it is but you're not getting it because your dish isn't properly aligned.

I live about 35 miles from Albany and do get the SD locals for the Albany DMA. I don't watch them as I get very good OTA digital reception. I do have the AT9 dish with H20 receivers but I get all zeros on the 99 and 103 transponders.
But YESH and SNYH are coming in fine. So they must be on the 119 with the other Albany SD locals? Or is my receiver lying to me?
When the AT9 was installed in October, I only had a couple SD receivers and an HD-TiVo. I never actually checked those other sats when I recently replaced the SD receivers with 2 H20s. Assuming that there wasn't anything on the 99 and 103 for me just yet.
Very nice. Every Yankee game in HD. Woohoo!

YESH and SNYH are MPEG-4 and are on either 99 or 103. There is a bug in the software on the H20 receivers which prevents them seeing 99/103 correctly when you read the signal strengths. The HR20-100 reads the 99 transponders incorrectly and does not read the 103 at all, even though it may be getting programming. The H20-600 gives correct readings on 103 but nothing on 99.

I actually posted this as a new thread but thought it might apply.
Last night I found that I had two channel 625's again. The difference this time is that one of them was HD.
To be clear: (I hope )
1. Up until about a week ago(now is 20APR07) I had no HD RSN's.
2. A few weeks ago I had two SNY's, YES's, and NESN's, all of which were SD.
3. Those in the NYC & Boston lil's had something similar but actually had HD versions these stations. I'm not in either lil.
4. The multiple versions of these channels went away and I had just one SD version of each.
5. Last night(19APR07), I set the guide to ALL CHANNELS and there were two channel 625's SNY & SNYH and the second was actually the HD version.
6. I previously posted a series of emails between me and SNY where they indicated I wouldn't get SNY in HD yet.

Thanks for the great info. My receiver WAS lying!
I don't remember right now if either of the H20s are -600. One of them might be and I don't think I used it for the signal strengths. I can at least check the 103 if I have an H20-600. I'll have to check the software revs on them too.
Overall, still good news since this means my dish is aligned properly, at least for the transponders these channels are on.
One last question though: I know that one of my receivers does not have the b-band converter installed, yet both are getting these channels. Isn't that converter needed to get 99/103 stuff?

Just out of curiousity, how are they doing this? Are YESH and SNYHD not on spot beams? Assuming they are, does this mean Hartford is on the NY spot beam? I had always thought is was on the Boston one. I'm a baseball nut so I love the additions, but being a Red Sox fan am hoping for one more addition.

Hartford has a spot beam on the 103 satellite. Boston and New York both have spotbeams on the 99 satellite.
So that begs the question, how are they expanding these RSN's coverage and can we expect the same with NESN HD?

I have YESHD on channel 95 and I'm in northeastern PA.
Well, this is pretty sad and it says a lot about D*'s mindset these days. My local TWC is offering YES-HD on a full-time channel, here's (http://www.timewarnercable.com/CustomerService/CLU/TWCCLUs.ashx?CLUID=349&Zip=&Image1.x=53&Image1.y=5&Image1=submit) the link, scroll down to ch. 721. I think it's pretty f*&#ed up when cable can do something for me and D* refuses.
I have YESHD on channel 95 and I'm in northeastern PA.
But you don't have YES-HD full-time like those in a MPEG-4 served area would.
But you don't have YES-HD full-time like those in a MPEG-4 served area would.
Well, just discovered I now have 622H and 625H (YESHD & SNYHD).
I don't need it full-time because games are all that interest me. Actually, while I am a Yankee fan, I find the Red Sox more interesting. Rivera and Mussina have been to the mountaintop and are sliding down, Pavano is...err...usually on the DL, and overall the Yankees are not going to to it on hitting alone -- IMO. I am surprised Steinbrenner didn't get Dice-K, and with what I see now, the Yankees will be lucky to finish second. The Red Sox have good pitching and in first place without the hitting of Ortiz and Ramirez! When those guys begin to hit, and with their fine pitching, Papelbon is the king of Closers, I think they are going to be one very exciting team to watch, almost makes me get MLBEI.

So that begs the question, how are they expanding these RSN's coverage and can we expect the same with NESN HD?They are, most likely, simply adding the channel to additional adjacent spotbeams. Assuming space is available, and your zip code qualifies, there is no reason they couldn't do it with other RSNs.
However, I don't think there are any zip codes where a viewer is qualified to receive both the NY RSNs (YES/SNY/MSG/FSNY) as well as NESN.

Actually we get all the above in SD (06095) and recently YES and SNY in HD. NESN-HD is available on the local cable cos and likely only a matter of time on DirecTV (although the waiting is the hardest part).

Same here (06415); always got all Yanks/Mets/Sox, and now get Yanks/Mets in HD (but want Sox!).
When YES/SNY showed up the other day, I called...and they said NESN showed as 'updating' for our area.

NESN HD updating? Any elaboration on that? It just seems that whatever method they used to expand YES and SNY HD coverage could be used for New England with NESN HD and similar markets across the country. If it's just that they have not gotten to it yet, I'm cool with that... if they say it can't be done that confounds me.

I saw a game on 95 and fairly certain it was HD (don't know if MPEG2 or 4), and we are in northeastern PA. The channel we need now is NESN, which I believe is 623, so we can watch more of those Red Sox games.
Too bad you have to wait until Sunday because tonight's game between Red Sox and Yankees is with Dice-K going against Pettitte, should be interesting!
The Yankee/Red Sox game last night was not available on YES for "live" viewing, but they had it on YESHD later that evening (at 11 pm), obviously taped. The Mets game on SNYHD was shown in SD. I actually don't get MY 9, it's a New York station. The local cable company here does offer it, but not on D*.
Friday's game was on WSWB 38 though. WSWB used to carry all of the games that were on WWOR (MY9), but they've shifted the majority of them over to the area's MY network channel - WQMY, which d* unfortunately does not carry.
I'm hoping that WSWB at least continues to broadcast the Red Sox / Yankees games.

Channel 38 WSWB has also added a Phillies game this weekend that was scheduled for WQMY. I think they are getting a lot of complaints from Yankee fans and Phillies fans who are not able to get WQMY on over the air antennas, DTV, or Comcast.
skaeight
04-30-07, 05:32 AM
Yeah its absurd that they'd move the most valuable programming on WSWB over to a channel no one gets. Either secure carriage on D* and Comcast, or show them on WSWB.
Ronmort
04-30-07, 05:42 AM
I think maybe they felt if they moved their games over to WQMY, the cable and satellite companies would be more likely to add the channel on their service. As of yet, Comcast and Directv haven't budged. I just hope they continue to add more Yankees and Phillies games on WSWB.
