I got this set up and thought "that is cool" but can't for the life of me figure out why I need to do this.

Thanks for any links/info, i would hope it has some function. In a perfect world it would work like a sling box and let me watch tv at work!:hurah:

As of today... no, it has no functionality with regards to the Internet.

However, once it is connected to your home network, you can share Music and Picture files if you have an appropriate media server running on your PC

Do we have any idea when we will be able to share video?

Video on Demand is coming... are you ready?

I'd prefer to have this feature before VOD, but MRV won't make D* any $'s like VOD might.

I don't want to be overly critical, but I find the interface for browsing music and Photos very cumbersome. Is there plans to make it more user friendly? I have (like many I'm sure) gigs and gigs of MP3's and traversing through is a exercise in patients. Maybe a full screen menu would be nice. just a thought.:D

earl: the black hr -20 -100, which was a replacement for a malfunctioning hr 20 700, does NOT have any internet features that the 700 had; it connects to your home network but specifically says that it does nothing at this time; when are the alleged hr 20-100 updates coming????

I think, in the interest of full disclosure, that DTV should declare to us what this unit is reporting to them over ether once an internet connection is established? This unit is on my network and I have a right to know what I'm providing to them. Viewing privacy issues may be in play here. Are they?

Has this issue been breached yet (I've got to believe it has) and could someone please provide a link for me (us) to the official answer?

Thanks!

How different is this from what D* could or couldn't have been collecting via the phone line connection since day one?

Not at all different. They can collect what they want, until you tell them not to. If that is still too much info for you, you can go to someone else's service (and they will do the very same things, of course). I'm sure we give/gave D* quite a bit of latitude to collect information when we signed a service contract. I, for one, didn't read the fine print (I've been a customer since '94 and I'm sure they have TONS of info from my long term relationship)....and I couldn't care less.

[Waxing Philosophical: don't read below if you don't want to be irritated...way off topic]

So, live with it, try to enforce existing law, lobby your local political prostitutes for a change in the law, or disconnect from the outside world.

For me, it much ado about nothing. They (whoever 'they' is) can read my emails, listen to my phone calls, monitor my viewing habits...whatever...they will be bored. What little privacy we do have, I'd make minor efforts to maintain...but it is largely an illusion. Most people have no idea how much information they have, and continue to give up willingly or unwillingly, and D* is probably the most innocuous of offenders.

He who sacrifices liberty on the alter of security deserves neither. We gave up most of what was left right after 2001, and most people were in the cheering section. We have gotten exactly what we deserve. D*'s repository of info on customers is laughable compared to what has really gone on, and I find it sad that anyone would be concerned about the trickle of inconsequential info going to D*, when a raging river of much more personal information is being routinely compromised at the whim of those in authority (whom we elected and continue to praise). Too funny.

Hasan, that was my point, if you had the phone connection D*, E* or cable companies with their two way STB's could have been doing this all along.

I used to work in networking group for an insurance company. Management would always ask are we 100% secure and the answer was always no. No matter what you do to try to protect data someone can/will find a way to get around it. The only 100% sure way for network security is to never connect to a network.

Yes, indeed, I was agreeing with your statement and then ranting about the myopic view of the issue. I only quoted you in my reply, because of my strong agreement with what you said. I couldn't get your excellent point in, if I quoted the OP. Sorry for any confusion.

The HR20-100 functions identically to the HR20-700 with regards to what it can do with a home network.

It says it does "nothing" with the Internet connection, same as the HR20-700.
The HR20-700 is not doing anything with the "Internet" connection, that the user can initiate.

As for the "alleged" updates... they are not "alleged", they are being worked on and tested...

I had just connected mine to my network, and it recognized my Windows Home Server installation right away, and I was able to set up windows media player 11 to share as well.

COOL!

Yep, it's a bit "klunky", but it works, sort of. Don't be surprised if you have some loss of connection issues, or it stops playing, etc....this is very new and not refined in any way. It's more of a plaything at the moment, but it is neat!

The problem is that I am NOT looking to DirecTV to help me share my pictures and audio. I have other tools for this. What I am looking to do with the network integration of my HR20's is to share the video that I have recorded on one device with another. IF they care to enable the viewing of video stored on my pc's that is a bonus (but again I have other tools)
At this time I have no need to connect my hr20's to my network. They just provide clutter :) I only like to allow devices to connect that are providing a purpose.

I had just connected mine to my network, and it recognized my Windows Home Server installation right away, and I was able to set up windows media player 11 to share as well.
