I've noticed in Atlanta that anytime there is a storm watch and they deploy the map at the bottom left of the screen, they drop put of HD.

They pretty much keep the bug on all the time, so if you have a tornado watch that generally lasts for several hours, your evening of HD programming is shot. ( Additionally a crawl goes across the bottom on occasion.)

Now they can put the station ID on the bottom of the screen during the news in HD, why can't they stay in HD for these weather bugs/crawls?
I'd certainly hope this is going to be the way it's always done. :(

Short version: They are to cheep to purchase the equipment needed to do this. Like character generators, weather equipment, or recording devices capable of HD.

Here in Tulsa we had that issue during an ice storm this year and the AFC playoffs on the CBS affilate. They got hammered by calls and email. Bottom line there is a "part" (I was told) that enables the station to keep the HD stuff up along with a crawl. Our CBS affilate had that part in within a few weeks after the complaints they got. Email the station and get on them to fix it.
