I'm certainly glad the folks in Santa Barbara no longer have to suffer with standard definition (their lives are so rough already).

Must question why DirecTV concentrated on such a small population (DMA 122!!!) when there are MUCH larger markets waiting....

I certainly understand your frustration! I live in the Santa Barbara DMA and was shocked to learn that they were going to launch HD (it was originally announced last year)

All I can point to as an explanation is satellite penetration. The DMA covers over 130 miles north to south, so it covers a lot of land without a lot of population. For me satellite is the ONLY option, and I am sure this is the case for many others in the DMA. That being said, because of my location I already had waivers for the 4 networks out of LA, so the launch of these channels will not be a life changer. I will be glad if they start blacking out HD broadcasts on Sunday Ticket, however.

Also could be something as simple as they had space on the L.A. and or other spotbeam in the area to put up the couple channels there. Many smaller DMA's with only a couple stations get added like that, extra room on the spots for a large nearby city.

The Spaceway sats don't really have a traditional spotbeam configuration so don't really know if you can exactly say that. Starting a few weeks ago I noticed a signal from a transponder on 103 that was never lit before so, I'll guess that's Santa Barbara.

HD locals are up in SB. Cant say why but I'll take it. What I can say is OTA was sketchy. Our Networks were really far apart so it made OTA really difficult.

Well, what I don't get is why they call it the Santa Barbara DMA... My buddy from Goleta told me that SB doesn't even have its own stations. He said they are all in Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo.

It's actually listed by Nielsen as "Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-San Luis Obispo, CA." Most people shorten it to just Santa Barbara for the sake of simplicity.

Yea, similar to how my market is officially "Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek" but usually shortened to just "Grand Rapids".

My mother lives in Arroyo Grande which is between Santa Maria & San Luis Obispo... It's always interesting when I go up the coast and visit since she gets telecasts from all over the place, (SB, SM, SLO)...

Maybe now that they have HD I'll finally get her off Charter Cable and upgrade her to HD DirecTV.

Anyone in SB area have NBC HD (KSBY)? I've been told they just aren't feeding DTV HD yet.

KEYT (ABS) looks super - getting HD. Was getting this OTA, so I guess I can pull the bow-tie antenna off.
KCOY (CBS) looks super - getting HD (1080i)
KKFX says it's DT, but I'm not sure I've seen a HD broadcast yet. I was looking forward to seeing NASCAR, 24, Bones, etc. in HD now, but watching NASCAR right now and it's 720P, but they aren't feeding any HD programming (SD with pillars). I'm assuming it's the same for everyone else, but let me know if I'm missing something here.

edit: just discovered KSBYDT - the NBC affiliate has appeared in the guide. definitely wasn't there yesterday. looks like 1080i - don't know if it's "really" HD, will check later when they have HD programming.

They sent in waiver requests for me [for KTTV] - but I haven't heard. Guess I could call - but I figure it'd show up in the distant network channels (80's).

I had called them right after the local HD's came up to complain about the lack of NBC HD local and found out KNBC had approved the waiver, but KSBY denied it. Yet another aspect of the "consumer friendly" sat laws came to light: If multiple locals are listed for a market, ALL of them have to approve a waiver! I was pretty annoyed at that, as I expected another 6 months before KSBY came on board. So, it was a nice surprise tonight when they came up in DT HD.

Although KTTV will probably approve the waiver, I doubt KKFX would, so no waiver.

I re-read the DTV press release and it DID say HD programming for KKFX - and the program guide shows HD. Called them to find out what the story is (like are they working on it or is it just false advertising...). They've escalated my query and I'm supposed to get a call back. I'll post any info I get on the missing HD programming.

I think some stations, especially ones in small markets, can sometimes forget to flip the “hd switch.” I suspect this is what happened with KKFX...

Most of my waivers were approved before D* offered sd locals in the area, so I suspect that you will be hard pressed to get anything approved now…and really there is no need for them anymore…I have even heard that D* will turn off a customers distant nets once they start serving their markets with HD…

I speculate we got our local stations in HD because they think we are all rich in this DMA, just the kind of high value customer D* is looking for....:sure:

SBHD...have you heard anything from KKFX about why they are not broadcasting the mlb games in HD? Another week, and once again they are not showing the sox and yanks in HD.

Nope - sorry. Haven't heard anything :(

They said I should "expect a phone call within 4 days" after it was escalated through the normal tech support. That was as of last Saturday (4/22).

Still no sign of any actual HD coming from KKFX, although the downlink is HD from DTV.

I am getting very nice HD, 16x9, feeds from all three other networks (local for our market: KEYT (ABC), KSBY (NBC), KCOY (CBS).

I think I've only seen Dolby 5.1 from KEYT so far, others are DD (even for shows advertised as Dolby 5.1).

Race later today - I'm doubting I'll see it, but I can hope. The sad thing is I see the Busch series HD both live and on the ESPN-HD replays. You'd think with all the $$$ NASCAR NEXTEL CUP Series supposedly has to throw at problems, they'd make sure their programming is up to what the "lower" Busch series has available for fans.

Has anyone checked to see if any of D*'s execs have familiy in the DMA or maybe vacation homes there?:D

I will start out saying that I live in San Luis Obispo. On 4/21 we now have all four locals. For 8 months I waited for HD locals, and found myself to be a nonbeliever that we would ever see any locals. Put in for wavers three times and were denied all three times (tried for LA feed). OTA was the only way to get HD. But the problem is that FOX was not even a OTA played. The other three were on desperate towers 35 miles apart, and ABC HD OTA in Santa Barbara only came on line three months ago. I put up a 4228 and locked in NBC & CBS but still could not lock in ABC 64 miles away with great line of site. The bottom line is 98% of all Dtv subscriber with in the Sanata Barbara feed had no HD locals.

Dtv has done something no cable company or Dish Net has done in our area, put together four locals in one package. I am once again a believer.

FINALLY! Just tuned in "American Idol" and I think my eyes popped out of my head in disbelief: local FOX KKFX now feeding DTV in HD, with Dolby 5.1. Hope it isn't a fluke - looking fwd to House, Bones and NASCAR Cup race this weekend.

Seems funny, KKFX and KCOY are both owned by the same parent company, share facilities & staff, yet KKFX has Dolby 5.1 and KCOY does not. Oh well, I should be happy to have local HD (my attempt to stay (kinda) on subject).

So far, I think only KKFX (FOX) and KEYT (ABC) are passing along the Dolby 5.1. I imagine the others will follow over time. For me, the majority of shows I watch regularly are FOX, so I'm covered (woohoo). And for NASCAR, I think only FOX and ABC are covering this year.

The image quality for KCOY and KSBY are both terrific, btw. I'll settle for DD for now.

Apologies for dredging up an old thread, but I do have a question on this.

KEYT sees itself as a Santa Barbara and Ventura County station - it carries Ventura County news and has a news bureau there. It's also carried on all the cable systems in Ventura County. Is there any mechanism for getting it extended to DTV subscribers? OTA is not an option, at least not where I am.

Is it carried in SD?

I'd say write an email to the station manager or engineer and ask them if they have discussed carriage with Directv, or if they are going to.

No, there's a separate market (possibly called Central Coast ?).

DodgerKing

I always laughed at how SB is considered the central coast. If you divide the state into thirds, SB is still in the southern third. And much of its coastline is south of Point Conception (South facing portion of CA).

I believe you are in the LA market, and therefore you will never recieve any LIL SB stations via sat from Directv, in SD or HD.

Correct, Ventura County is LA market - however, cable throughout Ventura County already carries this channel and has done so for many years. It also carries all the "LA" stations. Is there a difference with Sat? Just trying to understand the "rules of the game".
