Just got it today.....at least 15-20 times today the sound became "robotic" or "metalic" for lack of better words.....did anyone else experience this issue??? I have the receiver hooked up directly to my TV via HDMI cable that I know is functioning properly. I switched over from an HR 10-250 and had no sound issues prior to the switch.
Thanks
Jeff

There are many posts on the HR20-100 sound problem on this forum and on others. The HR20-100 has old software, a couple of releases behind the HR20-700. It is expected the sound problem will probably be fixed once the HR20-100 gets a software update but no-one knows when that will be.
There is nothing you can do to solve the problem; you can ask for a replacement HR20 but there is no guarantee that you will get an HR20-700.

I also have the same issue. It happens only on recordings and 22 minutes apart lasting for 4 minutes each! :(
Oddly enough, only on HD recordings......

So, it sounds like a bad stream, pcm or whatever, but I get the same thing, usually on HD locals recordings. No rhyme or reason. And I get a complete audio dropout sometimes.

I also have had the same audio problem since my HR20-100 was installed a week ago Friday. D*'s "advanced" tech support said this was due to HDMI incompatibilities on my TV (brand new Mitsu WD-52631) but I told them I wasn't buying that based on the many reports of others with non-Mitsu sets. They said I should permanently use composite video and separate audio cables, to which I said that was NOT an acceptable solution to me.
I'm skeptical that this is a simple problem that s/w will fix. It sounds to me like a h/w design problem in the HR20. I hope not but...

Quick update: amazingly, a nice rep Jennifer in Customer Retention just confirmed actual D* knowledge of this HDMI-related audio problem and said they expect a s/w update to resolve it. She could not confirm a date on this.
She did say the reason for the audio problem was that a certain HDMI chip set used on some HDTV sets to handle the HDMI interface was "incompatible" with the HR-20 HDMI interface. So...hopefully a s/w upgrade can be conjured up to fix it. Cross your fingers...
