Why does D* insist they have limited bandwidth for HD and then waste what they do have? Friday night is a prime example. ESPNHD is showing the NYY/Boston game as well as D* showing it on Ch. 95. Who makes these decisions and are they completely clueless?

No matter how many channels are showing a given show there is ONLY one feed from the sat.

Not when its two different networks showing the same game.

Correct if they were showing the ESPN crew and the teams crew, I stand corrected, thanks. I ment if the programming was the same it could have many channels airing it but with only one feed to the reciever.

Yes, exactly like when 730 mirrors to 94 and 731 mirrors to 95. I also wish D* would stop showing the same game on superfan when its already being shown on espn.

They do it because the NYY-Bos game on ESPN is blacked out in New York and Boston. In order to offer a high-def feed to either market, they need to use the local RSN feed (YES or NESN).

Well, the people in those markets already get there game in hd because they have the 24 hour sport networks which makes no sense to put the game on superfan.

Actually the game is on in HD from 3 separate feeds -:

ESPN has it on in MPEG2 on channel 73
NESN-HD has it in MPEG4 on channel 623 (Boston area only)
YES-HD has in in MPEG4 on channel 622 (NY area only)
and one of the feeds (YES or NESN) ALSO in MPEG 2 on channel 95. Channel 95 is NOT a SuperFan channel, it is entitled HD special events. Sometiimes it shows the same programming, sometimes it doesn't.

So I might actually get to see tonight's game in HD afterall? Woo hoo!

I'm in Western MA and have to watch NESN for all Sox/Yanks, but I don't get NESN HD.

I was agonizing (ok, bitching) about having to watch 2 out of 3 of this weekend's game in crappy SD because I don't get NESN HD or Fox HD.

Now you've got my hopes up for a 2-out-of-3 the other way.

I think because of where you live the 95 will show tonight. Not sure which version but I cant see why not. You are in NESN land. My father in law is declared Albany market on Dish living in Lenox and he gets NESN. I just hope the NESN doesnt trump all programming since it will force you on the SD version. Man I hate blackout stuff.

I agree it's ridiculous to show ESPN games on 95 - or 731. And why am I paying for superfan when the 731 games are on 95 for "free"?

Games on 95 are not free. You'll only get it if you normally would be able to get the game, otherwise it's blacked out.

So in other words if you live in the market the RSN feed is coming from or have Extra Innings Superfan then you'll get the game. Somelike myself who does not have EI nor lives in New York, I wouldn't be able to watch the game.

They simulcast some games on 95 because it's in MPEG2 and for the many people that don't have MPEG4 receivers yet.

What's more complicated, US tax codes or MLB blackout rules?

i couldn't agree more..... why waste an MPEG2 HD slot on something that is already available to HD customers in both boston (NESNHD - mpeg4) and new york (YESHD - mpeg4)... and ESPNHD for the rest of the country. i understand people are still out there with MPEG2 equipment, but what incentive does the MPEG2 customer have to upgrade when D* insists on catering to them instead of saying "if you want RSN XYZ in HD, you need to get MPEG4 capable equipment.

It's not a waste to me since I'm halfway between Boston and NY and wouldn't be getting it on HD any other way, and I have MPEG4 equipment.

:)

Basically the (blurred) rivalry line areas are hosed cuz they sit between NY and BOS but not in either DMA. In my case ESPN will be blacked out but I'll get SD NESN if not for 95 tonight.

But why put on a game on Ch 95 that is also going to be on ESPN-HD? I agree with golfnut, the blackout rules are needlessly complicated. On top of that, D* goes out of its way and is way over-the-top when it comes to enforcing them.

Guess it's SD NESN unless I move tonight. ;)

Because people in Boston and New York will be blacked out on ESPN. Also for those with Extra Innings. I'd MUCH rather watch the game with my local announcers then the bozo's from ESPN. Back when ESPN would carry hockey I hated it when ESPN had an exclusive and then my RSN didn't carry the game because I'd cringe having to hear their lousy announcers.
So if I'm in Boston I'd much rather hear my NESN announcers then ESPN.

Anyway...

Look, there is no "wasted bandwidth" here guys. DirecTV provides HD sports games on 95 ALL THE TIME and have been for about 3 years now. Hockey, baseball, basketball, college football, NFL Network all appear on channel 95. Until the new sats go up and they can have dedicated channels for all these things this is the best we have. I don't know why anyone would complain about the ability to get sports in HD. ;)

If they don't choose Yanks/Red Sox then the other choice might be Tigers/White Sox. I think the Yanks/Sox game will have more appeal. There is no HD NHL games they can pick up since Versus shows Golf on Friday nights and NBA isn't in the playoffs yet.

Rights.

The RSN has the right to show it in one area....that area may be blacked out of the ESPN broadcast.

SOME areas may be able to get both. Go figure.

Either way, the RSN or ESPN want THEIR advertisements shown to the areas the program shows in.

Remember...Advertisements drive TV for the most part.

Are the same ads on both channels? if not, that's the reason it's duplicated.

If so, it's likely the same feed on both channels.

At some of the camera posts at Fenway, there were anywhere from 2 - 4 HD cameras. I imagine Japan is suppying their own crew, but I thought ESPN would use the NESN feed.

What I don't like is that on Sat. (FOX) and Sun. (ESPN), we are stuck with the totally clueless national broadcast team. Give me Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo anytime. (They had a great interview with Bob Cousy last night; it was "Red Auerbach Night" at Fenway Park.) Remy is a brilliant situational analyst.

Glad I get to watch 2 better teams, White Sox and Detroit! I did switch in time to see Red Sox beat NY.

95 was YES-HD. i get YES-HD on channel 622, the version they put up on 95 is MPEG2 and is the crutch that D* continues to provide MPEG2 customers. the only people that benefit from it are EI customers (in which case why put it on 95 and NY DMA customers that are outside of the spotbeams that provide MPEG4 RSN HD coverage.

I watched the game on ESPN-HD and listened to the NESN-SD broadcast on the other TV next to the big screen since I am getting a 721 (Channel not purchased) error even though I do have EI-Superfan. They were 2 different broadcasts, different views and cuts, it was kind of interesting to watch the same game through 2 different angles.I doubt that ESPN would ever use someone else's feed if they can help it, they want control over the images presented on their channel. It is much different than something like the world F1 or MotoGP broadcasts with one feed.
