View Full Version : Buying an HR-20 at a retail store?

If you buy an HR-20 from a retail store you're technically paying the lease fee. Does that mean, if something happens to it, DirecTV is responsible for supporting the hardware?
Let me ask the question a different way...
I have the protection plan coverage through DTV. If I buy an HR-20 from Circuit City, get it home and it dies, who replaces it?

I reckon if you are within the 30 day return period you could exchange it at Circuit City. Otherwise, DirecTV is responsible for it. I bought mine from Circuit City and DirecTV shipped me a replacement without any hassles. Since I was within the 90 day warranty for the HR20, I didn't have to pay shipping, either. (I don't have the protection plan)

Buying from Best Buy or Circuit City is no different then DirecTV when it comes to leasing and what not. And since you have the protection plan it doesn't really matter if it's leased or not, DirecTV will replace it.
But would he need the protection plan any more since the boxes are now leased?

Recently D* has added a sticker to the sides of new boxes. It states:
ATTENTION: This receiver is a leased product and is the property of Directv, Inc. This product must be returned to Directv upon cancellation of Directv serivce or additional fees will apply. If this receiver has been activated, DO NOT RETURN TO RETAILER.
There is more to the sticker. I'll post a pic later.

I would call D* and see what kind of deal they might give on one. I got mine for $0. I would only get one at BB or CC as last resort.

If i bought one at BB orCC i would prefer to return it to the store if it was bad, this way if i bought a black one i would exchange it for a NEW black one, if i sent it back to D* they might send me a refurbished silver one.

Looks like my price through a DTV CSR is $299, even if I want to upgrade my R15.
If I'm going to pay $299, I might as well just go into CC or BB and ensure I get a new receiver and the model I want. I actually don't have a preference but a 100b would be cool. I'm not getting my hopes up, that's for sure.

Protection plan will cover any owned receiver, cables, switches, and the dish. As well as if you need a service call.
If you need any of that then the protection plan is for you. Since I don't want anybody touching my stuff I don't have the protection plan.
