Will DirecTV have any problems activating a used DVR from ebay? Certainly they will chare for a new card, but any reason they would refuse?

Its very rare, but if DIRECTV believes the receiver to be stolen, they will deny. Otherwise, they are happy the more receivers that are active. :)

You can contact the seller and have him/her give you the receiver ID and serial number to verify its status with DIRECTV.

Right .... Like Tom said, a reputable seller will have no problems giving you the equipment's "Receiver ID Number". When you have this number, call DirecTV and verify that the equipment is not currently leased or has any outstanding account balances, otherwise you will have problems activating it on your account.

Expect to pay ~$20 for a new Access Card, although sometimes they'll waive that fee.
