I have heard that you can now purchase movies through Amazon.com and then transfer the movies to your Tivo box to watch. I went to the Tivo.com site to register but am unable to since I have a DirecTv Tivo box. Does anyone know if this is a feature DirectTv customers can use? Is the DirectTv Tivo the same as regular Tivo service? What's the difference? Thanks for the guidance.

This feature only works with standalone Tivos, not the DirecTV/Tivo DVRs. They're totally different services .... Tivo administers the subscriptions for standalone Tivos, while DirecTV handles DirecTV/Tivo DVRs.

Litz, Can I get stand alone Tivo service even though I have Direct TV?

Sure. Just buy a standalone Tivo. You'll have the added hassle of interfacing the standalone Tivo with a DirecTV Receiver to receive your satellite channels.

And paying $12.95/mo. or more, live without dual tuners (no standalone TiVo supports this feature for satellite), and no optical connection for DD5.1 sound.

No, not at this time.

That feature has been announced, but no timetable on when it will be enabled.
