Hi
I am a new HD subscriber with a HR20 receiver. I upgraded hoping to escape some of the major problems but my fears of problems may be coming true. DTV has been little help except for sending replacement boxes so I look forward to getting answers here to help me know if I have a receiver problem or not. The questions that I have has to do with NESN HD (my local RSN) and a general question on HD 5.1 surround sound broadcasting.
My initially installed box is a HR20-100. I had a problem that the NESN HD channel would not come in (just got a blank screen) unless I stayed on the channel and rebooted the box. Then as long as I stayed on the channel all was well but if I switched to another channel and then switched back to NESN HD the channel would not come in until I rebooted again. So DTV sent me a replacement which was a HR20-700 instead of a HR20-100. This box would not give me audio via the optical cable so it was pretty much a DOA. I went back to to my original HR20-100 while waiting for another replacement.
My replacement is here but strangely my NESN HD problem on the original HR20 has not occured in the last 4 nights. I am receiving the channel without needing to reboot my receiver. However, although my stereo receiver indicates that a Dolby Digital signal is being received I am not getting 5.1 sound on NESN. I am only getting sound from the left and right speakers, no sound from the center speaker or surrounds. There are also some other broadcasts such as Jay Leno where the sound is only coming from the left and right speakers.
I thought that all HD broadcasts were in DD 5.1. Does NESN and other shows like Leno always broadcast in DD 5.1? I am confused because with the HR20 problem that I have been having I don't know if not getting full 5.1 sound is because the program is not in 5.1 or if it is because the HR20 is not properly decoding the audio. I appreciate any info on this. Are all HD programs in 5.1 or are some in 2.0?
