I keep running out of space on my HR20-700 which I think has a 320 Gig. HD. Can I upgrade it to a 750 Gig. or 1 TB hard drive or will that not work?

You could do a eSata HD.

Sure you can.
Buy an ESATA drive.
Plug it into the ESATA port on HR20, reboot HR20, and your now using your new drive.

Ok. Just checking. That is fantastic.

Since no one mentioned it, keep in mind that adding an eSATA drive doesn't act as additional space, merely a replacement for the internal drive. Still a VERY cool feature to have. :)

I just put a 500 gig inside a hr20-100 and it recognizes it so a 750 should also work

Paul,

When you did that does the free space meter work properly?

Ummm, let's not recommend this.
What you did voided your warantee.

Besides, IMHO, plugging in a esata cable is soooo much easier than opening the hr20 and replacing the drive.

yes it did ..I recorded same show on 2 hr20..1 320 gig ..1 500 gig..and the shows take up less space on the 500 gig

I don't have time to go through the main thread discussing this feature. Has any progress been made on activating both drives at the same time, or at least allowing the transfer of recordings between drives?

I had initially thought I'd open it up and add a new one, but I don't really want to void the warranty. eSATA sounds like the way to go, an esata enclosure is only $35. I just wish it would use it as additional storage not a replacement.

I plan on opening mine up and replacing the meager 300 with a 750 or so. Last thing I need is another box to power up and take up space. I'm surprised I didn't do it already, I voided my TiVo warranties practically before they were out of the box.

I think its also important to remember we don't own the HR20's.

Not to mention than given both the greater complexity of HR20 versus a DirecTiVo, and (therefore) the track record of the HR20, you are more likely to need the warranty on a HR20 than on a DirecTiVo.

Is there some kind of "seal" or sticker that has to be broken to get at the inside of the box? I've never looked. Granted, if you want to gamble with the fact that you never need to have your box looked at for service, who's to say that you can't replace the stock drive with a bigger one...then switch it back to the old one when the day ever comes that you have to turn it in. If all you have to do is swap drives and the box formats the new drive for you...that'd be super easy!

To be realistic. The HR-20 upgrade is ridiculously simple compared to the tivo and I agree that I do not want additional powered things in my entertainment center. Considering the warranty, there is no seal on the unit (at least mine) so all I did was unscrew the 6 t-10 screws, remove cover, unscrew the 2 t-10 screws on the support brace, unscrew the 2 t-10 screws holding the harddrive mount. Disconnect the drive. Unscrew the 4 t-10 holding the drive. Reverse the instructions with the new 750 gig (jumpered at 150) which I don't think is needed because the drive removed was not jumpered. Boot it up.

That was it! If there ever is an issue, I'll just pop the old drive in and send it away.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but if one just replaces the stock drive with a new, how does the OS and HR20 application software get on the new drive?

I believe the OS and App are stored on EPROM(chip) and not on the hard disk.

To be realistic. The HR-20 upgrade is ridiculously simple compared to the tivo...How so? The DirecTiVos (not considering the HR10) had no HDMI or component outputs, needed to handle lower bit rates, had a slower processor and slower memory (not mention less memory). It also needed to deal with only two satellite slots (110 and 119 look like one slot) without stacking of any kind. As far as the HR10 goes, I'd worry about warranty coverage on it for the same reasons as the HR20.

This is correct.

My bad...sorry, I missed the word "upgrade" when I read your post.
