View Full Version : Need help understanding signal levels
I have another tech coming out Friday because I'm having problems with Sat 99 where my NYC HD locals come from. My highest readings on that sat are in the low 40's and even the wind knocks out my signal. I did some testing of the other sats and noticed that on the 101 and 110 I'm getting signal levels ranging from 70 to 100. Is it normal to have such a wide range of signal levels from the same satellite? The 119 is the best with all signals in the 90's.
Wide ranges are not unusual, especially on 99 and 103.
Your 99 readings indicate that your antenna needs realignment.
Hopefully, you can have your antenna mounted more securely and then realigned.
On 101 transponders 4, 12, 18, 20, 26 and 28 are spot beams. The readings on those transponders could be almost anything depending on what spot beams you can see or not see. Typically you should see one or more that are very high, but also several that are either very low or zero.
On 119 the spot beam transponders are 23, 25, 27 and 31. Again, these could read almost anything.
At this point, 99 and 103 are all spot beams. If you get HD locals, then one of the transponders on one of those satellites should be very high, but the rest could be anything (high, low or zero depending on what spot beams you see).
The other transponders should all be fairly consistent in signal level, and typically in the 80's or 90's. The exact level may vary between different models of receivers (the H20 tends to read 15 to 20 points lower than most other models).

I had an installer come out and tweak my dish on Friday. The 101, 110, and 119 are all in the mid 90's, and I got my 99 sat up to about 83. Is 83 high enough for Sat 99 to avoid rain fade? The installer seemed to think so. I would consider tweaking the dish more myself but I don't want to throw the other good signals off.

83 is a decent signal and probably strong enough to survive through most rain situations; but I guess you'll just have to wait and see. At least the weather in NJ is supposed to be fantastic this week :D

I'm very anal, & so my 99 SAT is also in the high 90s. They are spot beams so should come in the strongest. Well that's me...
