I saw today that NBC will be burning off the rest of the epsiodes of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip starting Thursday May 24th, the day after sweeps.

30 Rock, a show that's done much worse in the ratings, and frankly in my opinion doesn't have a lick of intelligence in it anywhere gets renewed, while a show that has charm and wit, albeit admittedly above the average viewer doesn't. Sad...but that's just my personal rant.

I liked the show a lot and had argued in discussions over at TCF (TivoCommunity.com forums) that a big part of the problem for Studio 60 was scheduling.

If they had run the show on Thursdays in the e.r. spot, it may have done fairly well. If they had run it on Wednesdays in the old West Wing spot/slot, it probably would have done well.

Monday nights after Heroes was just a HUGE let-down, especially going up against CSI: Miami (eye candy + police drama with wiz-bang science, dna, etc.)

If NBC had flipped Studio 60 with Heroes it may have done well enough, and Heroes would have slaughtered CSI: Miami (at least according to a poll I put up asking which people would watch, Heroes or CSI: Miami. Even people that said they'd still watch CSI: Miami pretty much went for Heroes on-time or close to it, and CSI: Miami delayed...)

Anyway, water under the bridge, etc. I'd love to see Studio 60 come back with fantastic numbers that make NBC rethink their decision and give it a new life. e.r. is well past it's prime and deserved to be moved out of the Thursday evening slot. Lots of other holes on NBC's schedule too, but they don't seem inclined to fill them with much other than reality TV garbage and more game shows.

Couldn't agree more with all of you!! Studio 60 is funny, well written, great cast, nice chemistry, just stuck in a stinkin' time slot. And it's not like NBC is running a stable of all stars these days.

Yeah, Studio 60 was a great show, and was just starting to come into its own. Character-driven shows like this take a while to develop, and unfortunately NBC isn't willing to give it 1) the timeslot it needs or 2) the time it needs to flourish.

Hmm. Might be why the network is flailing.

The West Wing was not stellar right out of the gates, either.

Agree with everyone, too. I recall an article that talked about Studio 60 getting lambasted by a lot of people on the west coast and on blogs (one guy's was devoted to bashing it!), saying that they didn't find it as funny as a real SNL-type show (have they WATCHED SNL the last 15 years?!). Not to mention that they rarely did skits on the show; it's about the backstage drama, and some comedy. Jeez...
Anyway, just wonder if NBC was swayed by the above, and thought that the numbers wouldn't turn around even with more time. The networks seem to have somewhat wisened up in that regard, at least giving Arrested Development 3 seasons. But what do they figure they can replace it with that will do better?! Same with Arrested; like it's taking the slot of their next blockbuster?! They have dozens of other lame shows that will never be blockbusters.
So sad...

Have to disagree with y'all. Studio 60 had great promise, and occasionally sparkled. But the bottom line is that most of the characters are just not audience grabbers (or poorly developed), and most of the viewing public couldn't care less about what goes on backstage of a TV show.

Not to mention that the Matt-Harriet weirdlationship brought the plot lines in almost every episode to a screeching halt. Will they or won't they? Who cares! And Harriet -- OK - she's a Christian. We get it. Does every episode have to stop dead in its tracks to focus on this?

Brad Whitford seems to go thru every episode with a bemused look on his face as if he doesn't know what's going on. And if he doesn't know, why should we?

I do feel sorry for Tim Busfield. Cal seems to capture every scene he's in, even though this character seems to be the only one who doesn't have an ax to grind or excess baggage we need to be reminded about every week.

Nice try, Aaron Sorkin, but stick to politics, please!

Just gotta say this is the way series should end!! They actually got everything all wrapped up in a very entertaining and heartfelt show. Oh and of course the way it ended it could've easily flowed into season two if they decided to renew it instead of cancel it. It was just really refreshing not to be left dangling in the middle of a storyline that'll never be resolved as happens way too many times when a show gets axed. The fact that they did pull this off so successfully just makes me miss the show even more. :( Oh well.

And they probably would have had better ratings if most episodes were written "dumbed down" as these last few episodes were - instead of trying to be "too inside."

This is concept is best shown when they changed the name of the Hospital from Cedars-Sinai in the script to Hollywood Memorial (which doesn't really exist). Most anyone in LA who's anyone would go to Cedars - but clearly once again those outside of LA would not know that - so between the time the script was written and the time it was shot, the name was changed to Hollywood Memorial - so Joe Average in Tulsa could get it.

Too bad they didn't write all episodes for those outside of LA and the Entertainment business - then it would have had a chance with mainstream America.
