When I listen/watch HD channels that are broadcast in Dolby 5.1. the back channels seem very, very weak. Only if I stand right next to the speakers can I tell that there is any sound coming out.

My Denon 2805 receiver shows that I am getting a Dolby signal.

In another thread I read that the 5.1 sound from dish is at least comparable to a DVD with 5.1 sound, and on my system its not even close. DVDs sound awesome.

I have the settings as Dolby Digital/PCM and Line mode.

Any ideas why I am not getting the full sound?

I have the same question / issue. I just chalked it up to that is the way the receiver handles it. I am using a HDMI to DVI cable for video and an optical cable for audio. I was using the same settings but have since set them as PCM only to "normalize" sound level between HD and SD sources. Perhaps someone can give us a better setup.

Not all channels use DD 5.1, not all programs do either.

I can hear when the switch occurrs, the difference is dramatic.

I understand that each channel / program is different, but for example when I used to have Comcast, I had the same hook-up and I could definitely tell when a channel / show was broadcasting Dolby Digital. With the 622 you can barely hear the surround speakers. Is it just the way that the 622 process DD or is it because of the quality of the signal being transmitted by E*?

I have tried several different channels including RAVE, and no luck. Can you suggest a regularly scheduled program that is broadcast in 5.1 so that I can double-check?

Have you checked the volume level set up through the receiver for your rears?

Good point! I haven't changed anything in the setup since I had Comcast but perhaps I can increase the volume to the rear speakers!

I was having the same problem also. I raised the volume of my center channel by +2
to better hear the dialog, and i raised my rears by +3 to make the surrounds more obvious:)

I already balanced my speakers. The problem with raising the rears is that everything sounds great on DVDs already, so if I increase the volume on the rear surrounds its going to through the DVDs out of whack.
