View Full Version : Best settings for HD viewing
I have just set-up the Sharp Aquos LC45D40U 45 inch Flat Panel LCD HDTV with my DirecTV HD receiver.
I was just playing around with the settings (menu--settings--etc). Noticed 16:9 looks a LOT better than 4:3 (no more bars across the top and bottom!)
What is "native"? should this be on or off? how about the other settings? crop/stretch?
anything else I should manually change? Came with factory settings, but I want only THE BEST! THanks guys you rock

Native ON or OFF has to do with how your receiver sends the HD signal to the TV. One way has the receiver processing the resolution and the other lets the TV do so. There are lots of threads on here about this.
Most of your question's answers are often subjective and are based upon the TV model, type of programming, format of the programming, receiver model and software version, etc. Lots of variables..best way seems to be to simply try various settings and decide what looks best to you.

I use native off and set the outputs to 1080i. I also set it to stretch. It will strech all the SD programming to fill the screen, I think the HR20 does this better than the TV, Sharps smart stretch make me feel I'm in a fish bowl. I don't mind the pillars when watch 4:3 on a HD station (usually just the news).
I found I needed to turn the backlight and brightness way down on my Aquos. Very happy with it though.
Good luck.
