View Full Version : Am I supposed to be charged tax on all leased receivers

On this month's bill, for the first time since I became a D* sub 4 years ago, all of my recievers are leased (all 2 of them). On my bill, it shows two charges for $4.99 for leased receivers, with tax being charged for both; then, it shows a single credit for $4.99 (for the primary receiver), however there was no corresponding credit for the tax.

Is this normal when all of your receivers are leased, that you pay the tax on all of them, even though you don't get charged a line-item for the first one?

Thanks!

Depends on the state...

Some states require tax to be charged on leased equipment, others don't.

Ed,
To clarify, I am not really questioning the application of tax in general, but more tax on the first receiver. If you were answering the question with this understanding, then I understand your answer to be that some states require tax be charged on all leased equipment, regardless whether the sub pays a fee for the lease on all units.

Can anyone out there who has only leased receivers and lives in a state that charges tax on them tell me if you pay tax on all your recievers, including the first one?

Thanks!

Ed?

Am I going through a name change again?

I would think if you are being charged on any Leased receiver, then it should be all or none...

Actually it is probably that D* is not requiring you to pay the 4.99 for the 1st receiver but is not going to pay the tax for it also. Since it is leased they charge and then credit the fee but they don't credit the taxes for it. It's kind of like when you use a coupon at the grocery store. They charge it to your bill and then credit it off. However you still have to pay the tax on it as the store doesn't want to pay the taxes for it.

Wasn't there a guy on boards a while back that referred to you as Ed by mistake, and others picked up on it and used it as a joke? That's all I intended.

I think your logic is correct, but wanted someone to confirm. Thanks by the way.

I know... I think it was TCF where that occured.

Washington charges a tax on leased receivers, but I am only paying it on my second one (the only one for which a lease fee shows up on the bill). That was for the last few months. This month's bill shows it as an "additional receiver fee" with no tax. I suspect that Directv screwed it up, saving me a whopping $0.43. For two months after the latest price increase they forgot to charge me the DVR fee (they corrected that one, not retroactively, after I added a premium channel). At least the errors have been in my favor.

Have had my my HR20 for about 6 weeks. Recently got the first "regular" month's bill. It was the same. The credited for the lease fee, bu not the .30 tax. Seems kinda silly, but Georgia (like most states) has lots of silly tax rules.

In Louisiana I pay tax on my leased receivers, including on the 4.99 for the primary receiver even though the fee is waived.

that's how it is everywhere. You get credit for the first one, but still have to pay the tax.

When you buy a receiver you have to pay tax on the full purchase price. On a lease you only pay it on the monthly lease fee.
