Since you have 4 of them... I guess you are referring to the Standard Def Receivers... and not the two new SATs (which are also D10 and D11).
You don't need to upgrade any of them.
Functionally... they are the same.

I think that the D11/D12 support the "Active Channel" features, but not the D10. Otherwise they're essentially the same.

D10s are interactive as well. The only one not interactive is the h20 right now. d10, d11,d12,r15,hr20 are all interactive.

Cool. I stand corrected. The D10 is black while the D11/12 are silver, though, right?

I believe the D12 is also black.

i think they went back to black with the d12.
Yes, my D12 is black. Don't know if they also come in silver.

to put it simply, the d10's come loaded with software version 1.0...the d11's come with version 2.6 or whatnot. That's the main difference...the "included" software.
Now the d12...that's a slightly different animal

Huh?
My D11 came with software 1004 and has since been updated a couple of times to the current verision of 1041.
My D12 came with sofware 1040 and is still there.
I'm not sure what you mean by "version 2.6 or whatnot". Or is that a deeper level firmware that is never changed and the user has no information of or access to?

The D11 is silver and not black like the D10. It is also much smaller than the D10. I wish they would make the cases out of plastic. I have been shocked by several D11's.

I'm sure he was using 1.0 and 2.6 as meaning original and latest software releases, not as actual software release identification numbers since he didn't have those committed to memory.
Yes the original D10 units were large and black.
The D10-300s were small and black.
All D11 receivers 100/300/500 are small and silver.
The D12-300 units I have seen thus far are small and black.

Related:
I have 4 D10s. I went on vacation to a lake house that had D11s. There is a HUGE difference in how fast menus, guides and channel surfing occur. I'm hooked on the faster performance. I need it to replace two of my D10s.
Now I'm in the market for the D12 (since I heard it is faster than the D11). Can I just buy a D12 and swap out the card in my old D10? Do I have to call DTV to activate the new box? (Will they charge me extra?)
Anyway, where's the best place to buy a D12? Directly from DTV or some other retailer? suggestions?
thanks!

Get it from here:

If you order directly from D* there is no guarantee which model SD receiver you will get.

Thanks for the quick response.
I think I'll order a pair. Can I swap out the activation cards from my existing D10s into the D12? or do these come with their own cards and I have to call DTV to switch?
thanks!
New D12's will come with their own cards. You need to call DirecTV to activate them on your account. You can deactivate your old receivers at the same time. If they are leased, you may have to return them. If they are owned, you can do what you want with them.

Which means trashing them. I have an old D10 sitting around collecting dust, so I checked eBay to see what they're going for. For the most part, they're not even being bid on.
