I have the DVR set to go 3 minutes late when recording Heroes. However it refuses to do it. It records it for exactly one hour. Even next week is set for an hour. Why does it refuse to record the extra 3 minutes I have it set for? There are no conflicting programs at that time.

Yeah... but is there a 10pm timer that might need the tuner that Hereos is recording on. Take a look at next weeks schedule and see if there is a timer set to go off at 10pm. If there is and it uses the same timer that would explain why Heroes does not record the extra 3 minutes.

I had that same issue with Ghost Whisper last season. I finally set the pad to +10, and the DVR recorded 1:10.
This season, it is back to the default, and it works fine. I figured it had something to do with the data the guide was getting.
Edit: I never did figure out what caused this, though I did spend 3 straight weeks trying to find out. On the 3rd week, I deleted (as opposed to skipping) all timers for that night, including the one for Ghost Whisper. I created a new timer for Ghost Whisper, and verified the pads were set to 1min before/3min after. It was the only event recording for that night, and I put the receiver in stand-by, not using it. It recorded 1:01...the 01 was the start pad. It still skipped the end pad. I changed the end pad to +10, and left it like that for the rest of the season.
I've had it happen with other events, but always explicable...next timer firing, etc. This one, I never have figured out.

Yes, but there are two tuners. One should not affect the other. And even if there was only one tuner the extra 3 minutes of heroes should then cancel out the 10pm show due to prioritizing. But at the least the 10pm show should be using the other tuner.
At least that's how it worked on Tivo.
However, if this is the case how do I force it to use the other tuner for that particular 10pm show?

Limited knowledge here... but I believe it actually depends.. The 622 tries to do the right thing and most of the time does it. Check your 11pm timers.. Remember there is a domino effect going on here and what is set to record at 10pm bumps up to the 11pm shows. Also is the 10pm show on the same channel? If it is, then the 622 will record both shows using the same timer and remove the padding since it is already on your other show. (Memory serving me correctly I hope, been a long day though).
If this is not the case. Delete the 10pm timer and see if that changes things. If it does add it back and see if that rights the world. Also, if it is a Dish HD local, I would try setting one timer on the mapped channel and another on the 6xxx channel. That might work.
Without actually seeing the guide it is hard to see what is going on. I do know Dish does some things to optimize tuner management, but I don't know the details. Would be nice to have though . Anyone got the details.. Would love to add them to the top of the forum
I know this is not a definitive answer, but somethings to try.

When I first got the 622 last in April '06, I tried doing some timers manually or editing timers after setting them from the guide. The 622 completely ignored my changes and haven't done any manual timers since. I only use the guide to select the shows for recording. I hardly have any problems doing that. Has the manual editing problems been corrected?

I had no 11pm timers. Heroes at 9pm, CSI Miami at 10pm and a movie on HBO that started at 10:25pm. So there was room in the timers to do it.
And every show was on a different channel.
In Tivo if you set something to go long and the tuners were full it would tell you there was a conflict and not record the 2nd program. Which is fine as it gives me the chance to make adjustments. No matter the channel the tuners always did what they needed to do and provided the me the info when they couldn't.
I do also have an antenna so technically I have 3 tuners. But NBC on my antenna can be alittle bit flakey so I record heroes over the sat tuner. I can move CSI:Miami which comes on after to the antenna though. Maybe that would work? I typically have no other events scheduled for monday nights other than those two.
I have noticed some of my recordings ending early over the last month, and it happened tonight.
1. - I had a weekly timer for "house" @ 9PM-10PM that is set to start 1 min early and end 3 minutes late (I think the default) on a Dish local SD channel.
2. - I selected a baseball game from the guide earlier tonight and set it to record once from 7PM-10PM and to start 1 min early and end 60 min late (I think the sports default) on a regional SD sports network. I did not change the default settings.
3. - I had a one-time timer to record "the sopranos" @ 10PM-11PM that is set to start 1 min early and end 3 minutes late (I think the default) on HBOHD.
Nothing else was scheduled tonight - the 622 is in single mode.
At 10:00PM both #1 and #2 timers were stopped and #3 started. It should of not stopped the #2 timer, right?
Like I said before I have noticed it before and I think it was on other sporting events over the last month that did not continue thru the 60 min extended recording time.

For over 14 months, have never had a problem in having the 622 record shows accurately. In the last 3-4 weeks, I have no confidence that the shows I am recording will in fact finish once they start to record.
Sometimes the unit will stop recording in the middle of a program, sometimes stop 5-10 minutes short of the finish, etc.
Could this be due to the new firmware downloads recently?? Anyone else having the same problems??

Call and get a new replacement for your 622. This is not normal behavior.
