My brother in-law just hooked up this system yesterday. His plasma is only 720P, but the installer set the 622 to 1080i. The 622 is connected via hdmi to a Denon 2807 receiver, as is the Denon dvd player. The plasma is connected via hdmi from the Denon receiver. I don't like this setup because he can't watch tv without the receiver being in use..........but it is his setup. The main question is should the 622be set to 720p to match the plasma or does it really matter?

From what I understand a TV that can do 720P can do 1080I. I have a 50" Panasonic plasma. I Have tried the 720P and the 1080I output setting of the 622 and they look the same to me.

If his TV has two HDMI ports, he can run the 622 into one and the DVD player to the other. I have mine set up this way. I aslo run the digital audio out from the 622 and the DVD player into my receiver. With this set up I can watch TV and DVD using just the TV speakers or/and my home stereo if I want.

I have a similar set up with my Pioneer 5040 that also does 720/1080. I prefer the 720 setting since I am using the component rather than the hdmi set up. I tried both set ups and prefer component over hdmi resulting in a softer smoother looking picture. I found the hdmi to look more grainy and showing more edge enhancement. But the graphics did pop more on the hdmi. So it all depends what the user prefers. I also found 720 to look better with sporting events.

I too have a Pioneer Plasma. I tend to switch between 720p and 1080i periodically, kind of depends on what I'm watching. I find that 1080i is a bit softer, and tends to make SD material look a bit better. While 720p is sharper and makes HD, especially sports look better. Usually I run at 720p but if I have an SD show I'm watching that looks bad I'll sometimes switch to 1080i and then forgot to put it back to 720p. I'm running my 622 via HDMI.

As far as the HDMI vs. Component and 720p vs 1080i which is best debate, it really comes down to your preferences. You need to pick what looks best to you .

It depends on the the monitor. Each brand has different scalers. Your mileage may vary.
