View Full Version : De-Activate 2nd tuner?
I live in an apt. complex where only one DirecTV source is provided, but as you all know the HR20 has 2 tuners.
Is there a way to de-activate the 2nd tuner?
This is causing all kinds of screw ups when it trys to record overlapping shows.
Thanks!!!

Go back through the setup and select one tuner not two.

Where do I "select" how many tuners?
What it does do is on rebooting looks at the SAT feeds & if it doesn't see anything on #2, it doesn't keep it on line. Much like an auto-detect, if you connect a cable to it you need to RBR to get it to work.

The old wise one is correct again. :righton:
Just make sure when you connect the line, that you put it on Sat 1.

You could always run a second line from a different wall connection. Then you would have 2 lines.
Unless there is only 1 connection in the entire apt. , which would seem odd.
Thanks guys...
I have the dongle thing plugged into the port for the 2nd tuner, with no coax coming into that. This must have fooled the box into thinking a line was there. The installer left it there so I wouldn't lose it...
So tonight I will remove it and re-do the setup to see what happens.
As for my apt, not sure of the wiring, but suffice to say I get the standard channels, HD channels, and OTA via rabbit ears. The installer who services the entire complex swears that there isn't the extra wiring in the wall to support the 2nd tuner.

With the BBC removed, "all you should have to do" [famous last words] is reset the recorder [either through the menu or using the red button under the access card door].
While the installer swears there isn't wiring in the wall to support a second tuner [& I understand his point], IF you do have another outlet in your apt. then it would support another receiver at that location, so connecting from it would give you what you need for the 2nd tuner of the HR-20. It's a bit of "out of the box" thinking & would require a coax running around [or though] the apt., but if it's there it should work. :)
Thanks!
Unfortunatly, I don't have another outlet in the entire apt. ( I live in San Francisco, so my apt isn't that big ) ;)
Cheers,
Chris
I found this on page 6 in the user's guide. Might be worth investigating...
3) SATELLITE IN 1 (FTM) – Use to connect the DIRECTV Plus HD DVR to a second LNB on the satellite dish antenna, giving you the ability to watch and record up to two programs at once. If your installation includes an FTM (Frequency Translator Module), connect the FTM output to this input. FTM is a technology that allows multiple tuners to work with a single satellite input. (FTM support may require a software upgrade. Ask your DIRECTV Installer for details.)

FTM is SMW, but:
1) not out yet.
2) not for multiple units off the same dish [it is for single units, not apts.]
I removed the BBC from the Sat 2 input, and 'red button in the front' reset the box. Afterwards, under Info & test > System Info it still read "Tuner 2: SAT, record".
I also tried simply redoing the Sat setup, via "Repeat Satellite Setup" via "Sat & Ant".
Is System Info where I should be checking to see what tuners are active?
Some more insight into my setup:
I only have 1 coax coming into the house. From there it goes into a VHF/UHF and SAT splitter. The BBC on SAT 1 is connected to the SAT output of the splitter.
The UHF/VHF output is not connected as I am using rabbit ears directly into the OTA port. This gives me better OTA than the house connection.
Any ideas?

I just went through a software update & left off the SAT #2 feed.
Under system test:
tuner #1 OK @ 95%
tuner #2 OK @ 0%
Then I started a recording. Next I changed channels, which brought up the message asking if I wanted to stop recording. My HR-20 knows I have only one SAT feed connected to SAT #1.
Time for me to reconnect #2 and reboot. :)
How do I complete a Software Update?
2) not for multiple units off the same dish [it is for single units, not apts.]Don't know much about this technology yet. Do you mean that in my 5 DVR/single dish household I would be unable to use SWM to free up the existing second coax at each location for OTA? Would be sweet if I could. /s

If you have a -700 [& not the -100] there is a national release that you will see tonight.
If you want to force it: reset the recorder & press 0 2 4 6 8 when the blue ring starts spinning.
If you have a -100, you can do the same thing but the software will be the same [0146] that you have now & not the 015C for the -700.

You will be able to use SWM.
If you were in an apt. with many units, then no as SWM will come in two "flavors": a five receiver model & an eight receiver model [which will be what you want].
I have the -700.
Will wait for the update tonight.
Thanks...
I think the horse is dead.... ;)
I received the new software last night. And in Info & test > System Info it still reads Tuner 2: SAT, Record.
Where are you getting the % readouts?

Tab over to system test.
Also do the same test I did. Set up a recording of anything & then try to change channels. You should see the message to cancel the recording to change channel.
