i just had a red light come on. what does it mean?

for me it means it is using the phone line.

My question is why a phone report ?, my unit is on a internet setup and sends
short messages every few minutes so why use the phone

It has to have something to do with those units that are networked. Never saw a red light until I networked my HR20 now I see at least one per day. Maybe its pinging, who knows.

I have noticed that the phone line lights up when the red light goes on ( maybe the HR20 is calling home:) )

I have had the redlight come on manytimes right after a CE. Last night it came on at about 3 AM. I just checked my Vonage phone log and the reciever didn't call out. It called out at 6:30 AM for 2 minutes and once at quater past noon for 2 minutes also. I think maybe when the red light comes on and it doesn't find an internet connection it then makes a phone call. Just a guess though maybe someone else knows for sure. I am hooked to the internet and when the red light comes on it doesnt call out.

Same here..almost seems like a random red light. Came on a few times yesterday afternoon while watching live TV via local HD MPEG-4. Was on for approx. 10~20 secs each time. Weird.

I have seen the Red Light when I use Game Lounge and sign on. I think it is calling out. That would concur with the theory that the red light is when the modem is in use.

No, the LED goes ORANGE when the unit is recording. When it goes RED, something else is happening.

As I understand it, the telephone connection is still needed to communicate your PPV purchases. They are not being communicated over the network or satellite at this time.

Yeah, I noticed the red light on the record button for the first time last night for about 30 seconds, and it was after I played a trial game of solitaire. (Normally, it's yellowish when recording.) I hope it wasn't dialing in to the mother ship to charge me for Game Lounge, because I didn't sign up for it. A phone call makes the most sense. On my TiVo box, red means record, and yellow means phone call.

I've been getting the red light pretty much every night at about 10:25 ever since the last update. I would imagine it's happening other times, but that's when I'm typically sitting there to notice.

After reading one of the above posts, I thought to check my Vonage phone log. Sure enough, there's a call out at exactly that time every night. What's amazing to me, though, after looking at the log is how many times a day it's calling out. Most days it's at least 15 to 20 times. Is it really supposed to do it that often?

My exact exoerience, including the test lock up and the rbr removal of the red light. No idea what happened or why.

D* collects viewer data unless you selected "Do Not Allow Data Collection". Maybe it's reporting your daily data...

How do I select to not allow data collection? This light has come on my HR20 15-20 times a day and is rather annoying. :confused:

Lately now Im only noticing the right light when Im in Game Lounge. It stays on until I exit then disappears.

I have only ever seen the red light during the "reset everything" cycle (I assume during the HDD format). Then suddenly last night around 10:30 CDT, I just started to watch a recording and there it was. I stopped the playback and checked system info. I have no clue, but I shrug it off and go back to the recording. Seconds later, it goes out. Anyone have a clue as to this mysterious and fleeting (about 60 seconds) red light? I am running national release 0x168 downloaded on 6/15 on HR20-700.

I believe its phoning home. The time or two I have caught the red light on it was using my phone line

I got the same thing after turning on the unit for the first time after getting the latest firmware update.When I pressed the " LIST" button to see if my recorded shows where still there I received a message from DirecTV telling me about the latest software and explaining the new GUI.So It may have been D`s way of sending subs a message, kind of like an FYI/e-mail via the receiver of the new features

I saw mine come on the other day while I was using the remote. I thought it was something I pushed but, I could not repeat it. I thought I did something wrong since I had never seen it before. I am glad to hear others saw it.

I searched the forum and found this thread.

I have 1 show recording...and am watching "Around The Horn" on my DVR....and all the sudden my yellow light turned to red for a few minutes.

No phone call or anything

Any reason why? First time I have seen it
