Hello,

Getting closer to upgrading from my HR10 to the HR20. One question I can't find an answer to: can the HR20 remote turn on both my TV and A/V receiver by simply pushing 1 button like the HR10 remote can?

Can't get mine to do it.
Perhaps someone else can show us a trick.

Also, can HR20 remote control the volume on my A/V receiver (I do not use the TV speakers at all) like the HR10 remote can?

My HR20 remote controls the volume on my AV receiver (I don't use TV speakers either). It won't shut off or turn on the receiver though. I still have to use the receiver remote to do that.

Catherine,

Do you need to move the switch to either A/V 1 or A/V 2 to change the volume?

I need to switch to A/V1 to power up my Denon A/V receiver. However, I can adjust the A/V volume while in Satellite mode. I forget where I found the instructions. The code number 993 rings a bell.

Can the HR20 remote turn the TV on and off?

Yes, unfortunately I do have to switch to A/V 2 to change the volume. Sorry, I neglected to mention that. I wish there were a way that I could change volume without moving that switch like my old DirecTivo did. Oh well!

Yes, pressing the "on" and "off" buttons on the remote turns off both the TV and the HR20 with no need to move switches or anything. It will also control the TV's volume if you so desire.

Why would anyone want to turn the HR20 off? Isn't it meant to stay on 24/7 like the HR10 to record things?

Go to Direct TV's web sight and then the technical help forums here.
http://forums.directv.com/pe/action/forums/defaultview?msgBoardID=10100433
and look around and you will find lots of info to program your remote. Mine is able to turn on and off my sat, tv, and receiver.
Good luck.

Maybe a clearer way to ask this would have been:

With my HR10 remote, I can:
1) turn on the TV and A/V receiver by pushing one button
2) control volume of A/V receiver by simply using the Vol Up/Down buttons (no need to switch from AV1 to AV2)
3) change the channel on the HR10 by using the Channel Up/Down buttons (no need to switch from AV1 to AV2)

Basically the HR10 remote can control my entire system without having to move a 'Mode Switch' or anything.

Can the HR20 remote do the same without having to slide the Mode Switch? Or do you have to slide the Mode Switch back and forth all the time to change volume, change channel, turn TV or A/V receiver on and off?

Even when you put the HR20 in stand by it is still on. The only way to turn off the unit is to unplug the power cord.

Oh, so when she wrote turns "off" the HR20, she meant put it in standby?

Yes. On the HR20 when all the lights are off it is in stand by. It does not have a red light like almost everything else in the world when in stand by.

From what I have read, it looks like you will have to get a Unverisal Remote to do that. I have been looking and of course do not know which one to get, however alot of people say that the Logitech Harmony 670 is a good one to get.

So the HR20 remote is not as intelligent/sophisticated as the HR10 remote? Hmm. Disappointing.

Can the HR20 remote perform all the same functions that I described by sliding the Mode Switch around? Or would I be forced to have to use my AV receiver's remote to control volume?

The remote will do everything that you asked about, except you will have to move the switch to an AV mode in order to turn the receiver on and off. There is a code which will allow you to control your receiver's volume while in the satellite mode.

Pheww, that's some good news. So let me see if I have the procedure correct:

1) While the Mode switch is set to satellite (the D* logo I presume), hitting the ON button will turn the TV on and bring the HR20 out of standby
2) Slide the Mode switch to AV1, then hit PWR to turn on my AV receiver
3) Slide back to satellite Mode to change channels of HR20 and control volume (including Mute) of AV receiver

Does this sound right? As long as I don't have to pull out the separate AV receiver remote, I (and the wife) will be happy.

That's right.
I just leave my amp on all the time.

I can highly recommend the Harmony remotes. My wife even knows how to use it. One button each controls:

TV, receiver, DVR

TV, receiver, DVD

Receiver, CD

TV, Receiver, Apple TV

Receiver, XM radio

Where is this code that will do this? Also with my A/V system, I can turn it on, but not off, read somewhere that is an issue with the A/V system I have though.

That's exactly what I do but I did have to run a separate procedure to get the volume buttons to control the receiver and not the tv. Here's the thread that describes how to do that part.

they are not cheap!

The HR20 remote will turn off (stand by) the Sat, TV and audio receiver. You have to slide the switch the turn off the audio receiver. You can control the volume of the receiver with the remote in the Sat. mode.

Thanks I try. The full directions are:

There has to be tv code programmed to the tv device or the volume keys won't work, then:

1. av1 or av2, whichever has the Aud code
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press SELECT

With MODE SWITCH On A/V 2 press and hold MUTE & SELECT then press 993 then SELECT You should be able to use it in D* mode now.

You guys are great.. This worked... I love this forum. When I first got D* about 6 months ago, I asked their technical support if the remote could do this and they told me no it can not.

Now the only thing I wish I could figure out is why the codes for my Onkyo that will turn it off and on. Right now all the codes I have tried will either turn the unit off but not on, or turn it on but not off. Very bizzarre....

I have the same problem with my Yamaha. The issue (I believe) is that there are different codes for on and off and the remote assumes that the on/off is a toggle using the same code. So it either send the on code or the off code but is not smart enough to know the current state of the device (what did I send last) to know to send the proper code for the next operation.
