I canceled Dish in 2004 and went back to Cox cable. Cox has a very limited number of HD channels in my area, and I am wanting to return to Dish and cancel Cox completely. I can get all my locals in HD OTA. I want America's top 250, HD, and an HD DVR. Thanks. Would I qualify for any of the current specials Dish has?

Called Dish and the guy I spoke with was VERY helpful and polite. Since I've been gone for 3 years and mentioned I am canceling Cox, he qualified me as a new customer, no land line phone required. In fact when I brought that up, he said "oh we don't care about that anymore". Getting Vip622 dvr, America's Top 250, the HD Package, my locals, Superstation Pack, and 3 months of free HBO for $63.97 a month. Installer will be here Friday (between noon and 5), WOO HOO!
Will let yall know how the install goes.

Just remember that if the phone line is not connected on a 622 dual dvr receiver , Dish will charge you $4.99 a month extra for no phone line connected. That is why Dish doesn't care if you don't connect it because they will make more money off of you.

Well that's ok, I don't really want to pay AT&TY $30.00 a month for a landline I'll never use, so the way I look at it, Dish is saving me $25.00 a month!

Great attitude! Does Direct have this policy too (charging for no phone connection)? If not, how do they police the receiver locations?

NO Directv does not charge for not having a phone line connected.

If you have no landline, can you still order pay per views via the receiver?
Yes, but there is an additional fee.
If not, how do they police the receiver locations?By cutting people off of sports subscriptions and PPV if they don't have the receiver hooked up.
If you have no landline, can you still order pay per views via the receiver? Not at this time.

Pick up a cheap VoIP box and subscribe to a free VoIP service that allows outbound toll free calls. Works great...and no $5 fee every month.

actually, you can order up to $25 of ppv (up to 4 events within 30 days) - before you must "call home" so... yes you can order ppv on your receiver without a phone line, but it's very limited. Just realize that anything you order on your smartcard will be billed to you the instant your receiver calls dish network, or return your equipment to dish.... you will not get out of these charges.

So I connect a Voip box to the Dish receiver, then to my cable modem? I guess that way I would only have to run a long phone line from the box to my computer room, and connect once a month or so.
I just don't want to go the $30.00 a month landline route when I use a cell phone all the time.

Actually - it might be easier to put the VoIP box in the room with your computer network equipment, then run either a phoneline or CAT5 cable up to your Dish receivers. But whatever works for you.

Ok, signed up for Broadvoice at $5.95 a month, so if Dish is gonna charge me $4.99 a month for no phone service, then looks like my new voip home line will be only 96 cents a month.
I have odd thinking patterns, I know.
But looks like this will work to let my Dish box phone home and everyone is happy.

Be sure to tell Broadvoice that you need a MODEM capable box.

Got my Voip phone hooked up, works great! They sent me a Linksys phone router, and I bought a cheap $9.95 phone from Wal-Mart. When I press talk I hear a dial tone, and the quality is really very good, so I'm happy. Also got a wireless phone jack for behind the tv so I don't have to run wire. Even had voice mail from Dish confirming my install for tomorrow and to call them back from this number, which I did.
Turned in my Cox cable box today, just keeping their broadband. The guy at the counter kept typing in the computer and asked, "why are you canceling?" I replied, "Going to Dish they have a lot more HD channels". No reply. When he was done he said "anything else?"
Wow.
I am so looking forward to my install tomorrow. It's Friday, it's payday, I get to leave work at 11am and I'm getting Dish. WOO HOO!

Just be prepared to wait for that installer. They still use local installers to do the work. I know I waited an hour over the deadline for my installer to come out with the leased 522 a few years back. They were supposed to come between 12 and 5pm and showed up at 6:30pm. LUckly all he had to do was put the receiver in place since I already had lines run and activate and we were good to go. Maybe you will still have lines from before run that will shorten your install time too.

The installer for my 622 called 22 mins early to ask if its OK to be early and of course I said sure. Ran 2 new lines and had me up in less than 1 hour.

At 2:15pm a large van with Dish Network and slogans all over it arrived, clean cut man gets out wearing a Dish Network polo shirt, and ball cap. Discussed antenna installation, he doesn't like to put them on the roof, and the dish was attached to the facing on the north side of the house looking south. Seems this tech worked for Cox cable for years, opened the cable box, and shook his head. Cox had all my house cable connected with what looked like a 99 cent Radio Shack splitter (rusted and corroded). This guy found the cable running to my cable modem, and connected it directly to the main Cox cable feed. Then he installed the dish, and connected the dish feed to the cable that runs into my living room. Installed all new connectors, cleaned the box up. Installed the vip622, was very meticulous about instructing me on it's use. even hooked up an attenuator so I wouldn't have to run another cable feed into the living room and told me where I live a "helicopter blade" looking outdoor antenna attached to the back of the dish will get all my locals in HD, then put another attenuator behind the vip622, and made a length of cable for me to hook up when I get the antenna. He even looked around in his van for one and would have given me one and installed it if he had one.
Tipped him $10.00. It's all the cash I had.
Now, HD PQ...MUCH MUCH sharper than with Cox cable. Discovery Channel jumps out of the screen now. SD PQ, HOLY MOLY good quality.
Install took 2 hours.
I am a HAPPY customer!

NO sarcasm I am just commenting on the fact that Directv is "supposed" to have over 100 hd channels by years end and TWC is saying that they can have endless hd channels by years end too. For now Dish has the most hd channels out of all three companies. Whether this stays true remains to be seen. I am betting that they will have just as many as Directv or Twc ,when they relaunch their entire service in mpeg 4, early next year with the launch of two new sats in December. So the future of hd on Dish looks very good.

Oops diplexer, that's right. I don't know where I got attenuator from.
As far as HD channels, my local Cox offers 7. To watch the Space Shuttle launch on HDNet last night was amazing, and Discovery HD really jumps out the screen. Dish HD is much much sharper than Cox cable here.
I've got various sets of favorites programmed on the 622 guide (locals, movies, fav), and just really enjoying this.
Very happy customer.
