I've had Dish for about a month and a half. I like it a lot better than T.W. cable, plus the price is better. When I called Dish to get pricing and set up installation, I had a really helpful CSR. I asked about the no phone line fees, since I want to put a dish in my workshop. I don't have a phone there but use a cordless phone when I'm out working. He mentioned some older models that didn't have a phone line requirement. I believe one was a 301. He also mentioned a couple of DVR's that didn't have DVR fees.

Well, a coworker switched to D. to get locals and gave me his old dish receivers. He gave me two 301's and a 510. I know some of the 5XX models don't have fees, but I don't find much info on the 510. I'd prefer the DVR, but it's not mandatory. If anybody can advise which models (if any) don't have a phone line requirement and/or DVR fees, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Thanks for any suggestions.

Receivers which have only a single tuner should be exempt from phone line requirements, so all of those mentioned above should be fine. Unfortunately, the 510 DVR would be hit with the DVR fee.

The 501 and 508 DVR's do not have the $5/mo. DVR fee.

Even though he is a friend call DISH with the R00 and S00 numbers of those receiver to be sure they are free and clear of any fees or lease obligations.

Also the 721. All the newer models such as 510, 522, and all the HD DVR models have the fee.

Thanks for the info, guys. So, does the 510 have the extra receiver fee + the DVR fee? If it does, it sounds like the 301 is the one to use.

I didn't mention the 721 because I believe he'll get charged a fee if it's NOT connected to the phone line. I have the 508 and 721.

The "no phoneline" fee is only charged on DUAL OUTPUT receivers.

The 501,508 & 721 do not have a DVR fee, all other DVR's do.

Kevin,
I understand that the 510 has a DVR fee and no phone line fee. What I'm asking is does the DVR fee apply along with the additional receiver fee. Thanks.

The DVR and additional outlet fees are unrelated. It is possible to have neither, either or both, and multiple times at that.

The 510 will always have the DVR fee which is waived if you subscribe to AEP (http://ekb.dbstalk.com/aep.htm) or reduced to $2 with the DVR Advantage plan. I don't know if DVRA is available for used receivers.

If the 510 is your only receiver there is no AO fee. The AO fee is applied to every receiver beyond the first regardless of model (shows as a lease fee for those who did not purchase). Boxes with a TV2 output get another AO fee, aka "no phone fee" (whether first or additional), waived if a phone line is connected.

You might have a couple of options (depending on your workshop).

Option 1: If you have electrical outlets in your workshop, you might be able to use one of those wireless phone jacks. Here are some that Froogle found (http://www.google.com/products?q=%22wireless+phone+jack%22&btnG=Search&show=dd&scoring=p&a_n0=merchant_review&a_y0=3&a_f0=3&a_t0=5&a_o0=3&lnk=merchant_review).

Option 2: You could get a dual tuner receiver in the house and just use the TV2 output for the workshop and use the RF remote.

Thanks for all the info. I'll use the 301... I've just gotten spoiled by the DVR in the house. I really don't want to run a coax cable to the garage. If I were going to do that, I'd just run a phone cable. I'll have to see about the wireless phone jacks. The shop (old detached garage) is about 35 feet across the yard. I wish I'd had the foresight to run conduit or additional cables when I buried cable to the garage, but then again that wasback in '92. Who knew we'd 'need' all these extras back then?
