Hi all, new to the forum. I am having difficulties setting up a new TiVo with my ViP622.

I can't get the TiVo to change channels on the 622 in order to record programs.

I have a HD feed and an OTA HD feed into the 622 with component cabling out to AV reciever then to plasma TV. I don't want to lose the benefits of the HD output by putting the TiVo inbetween the 622 and the AV reciever (there are no component cable inputs or outputs from the TiVo).

I tried connecting the 622 TV2 output to TiVo input then out to AV reciever with S-video cabling but can't get the TiVo to change channels on the 622 in order to record stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

TV2 output on 622 is RF only, TiVo is IR only.

I use my Tivo to change channels on my 622 but it MUST be on TV1 - you cannot use it on TV2.

Run comsite video and stereo audio to TiVo and HDMI or component to HDTV.

Jim,

Thanks for the quick response.
Unfortunately, I have a series 2 TiVo and it does not have an HDMI or component output. The best it can do is S-video.
I'm wary of losing quality of picture if I go from component output (what I have now) to S-video output.

Yes, you are right, I use an s-video from my Series 2 too. It's a little better than composite.

There is no DVR with HDMI or Component inputs that can record 720p or 1080i (DRM problems).

As a +5-year Tivo user, I know it's hard to give up the Tivo functionality. However, I quickly stuffed my Series 1 and 2 Tivo boxes into the closet after we changed from cable to Dish and added a 622 and 625 box. The Dish DVR functionality is not up to Tivo standards but it is not bad and certainly much better than the SA8300HD crap issued by our cable company.

I suggest you make the full switch. The Tivo's functionality advantages are not enough to offset its crappy PQ.

What are you trying to use the Tivo for?

The 622 is a great DVR. Just record your stuff on the 622. Its HD and your TIVO is not unless its a Series 3.

I am a former Tivo user but I am quite happy with my 622. Time to retire the Tivo.

It's like internet users that started with AOL. They just can't cut that cord. :D :D

I am also a former Tivo user and was really upset when I made the switch to HD and had to leave Tivo behind.

Started with the SA8300 POS from our cable company. It was one of the worst comsumer electronics device I have ever had.

I have been very happy with the VIP622 after switching over to Dish. While it is not a Tivo, it comes very close in all the features I wanted.

Hi all, new to the forum. I am having difficulties setting up a new TiVo with my ViP622.

BTDT with a ReplayTV and did get it working. But I eventually powered off the RTV and now just use the 622 (more on that later).

To work, you need to connect the Tivo to the TV1 S-video output (and stereo audio) as others have pointed out. From Tivo you can then run S-video to an input on the TV or a receiver. You can continue using HDMI/ Component out on TV1, all TV1 outputs have the same content, the only difference is the HDMI/ Component are HD. Using the IR blaster set with the right remote code it will control the 622.

But as I said, after about 3 weeks I mothballed the RTV and just record everything on the 622. I had originally planned to use the RTV to record SD programs and leave the 622 disk space for HD recordings. But 3 things led me to abandon this:
- SD recordings take relatively little disk space on the 622.
- You can't watch one 622 show and record something else on the external DVR, as both are on TV1.
- The 622 will go to it's screensaver every night even if you disable auto-shutdown in the setup menu. At least with the firmware on the box last summer, a channel code from the IR blaster would not enable the output. What this means is that half of my RTV recordings were of the Dish screen saver.

The only situation that the second DVR could be handy for is if there are 3 dish programs you'd like to record at once. We now just move the 3rd show to another ReplayTV in the bedroom. And if/ when Dish supports networking of multiple 622's, that RTV will go in the closet too.

The 622 took a little getting used to, but now I view it as superior _in most ways_ to ReplayTV and Tivo, both of which I've owned at various times. Both Tivo and RTV have a few superior characteristics, but on the whole I'm converted.

Thanks for all the input.
I got the TiVo box and service for free and am not at all concerned if I'm unable to get it to work fully, which, it sounds like is the case.
I agree with earlier comments about the 622-I absolutely love mine.

Matt,

Simply set one or two timers on the 622 for the wee hours... not to "Record" but rather to "Auto Tune."

SaltiDawg,
thanks for the reminder- I'd forgotten about that suggestion from last summer. Didn't reverse my decision to hibernate the ReplayTV then, or now. And this isn't a 100% solution- what if the Auto tune accidently comes in the middle of a recording on the external DVR? It's one thing to not be able to start watching a recording because it is all screen saver, but quite another to, for instance, have the channel suddenly change just before the jury returns their verdict on Law and Order!

BTW, I verified last night that a channel change input still doesn't override the screen saver, only a "Select" will do it.

Matt,

You don't set the Auto Tune to "Wake" from the screen saver... You set it to prevent the screen saver from ever kicking in. Simply pay attention to when you schedule the auto tune. This is not an elegant fix, simply a work around. If you want to fight it then I guess you shouldn't use it.
