View Full Version : DVD Recorder
I have a DISH 622 now and I am thinking of getting a DVD recorder that has a built in ATSC tuner and possibly a hard disk drive recording function. Would just about any of these work well with my TV-2? Is there likely to be any problems recording DISH programming onto something like this? Any certain "must have" connectivity for me to look for? Also, if there any specific units that you guys think would be most compatible with my TV-2 on the DISH 622?

They will work. The thing I hate about the TV-2 is that it is only composite--not even S-video. I prefer to use Svideo (or component) when feeding a DVD recorder to give it the best possible 480i signal. I have a Magnavox MRV700 plus an upscaling Philips DVDR3475. Both handle sivdeo from the 622 (and the SD 625) just fine. Neither has an ATSC tuner. However, this is a non-issue with the 622 since you can just replay onto the DVD recorder.
For me, my must have was a 1080P upscaler since my Mitsubishi 57732 does a less than adequate job of upconverting 480i/p.

Well the ability to add an external hard drive is coming so that should take care of any additional storage you need.
If you want shows and movies on discs I just rent and copy them. You'll probably get better quality that way.

E* has not put an ATSC output on the ViP receivers ... so if you are dubbing from E* feeds you will get SD (having an ATSC tuner won't help record E* content).
The ATSC tuner will help bring local OTA channels in HD to your 2nd room ... and being entirely separate from E* service and your 622 nothing E* does will prevent that external DVD from doing whatever it is capable of doing.
james:
Please clarify/confirm:
When I watch an OTA program on the 622 that is presented in HD and Dolby 5.1
can't I can record or view the program as presented(HD/5.1) via component,HDTV,and optical 5.1 outputs on TV1?
I assume TV2 only provides SD and Dolby 2 channel.

If you have a recorder, the 622 has matching outputs and there is no copy protection on the feed between the two you should be OK ... but be cautioned that programmers don't want their channels recorded ... if it works today it may not work tomorrow. :)

Who makes a DVD recorder that has component video and Toslink audio inputs? That would be the only way you could record 5.1 audio and the HD would still be downconverted to SD.
James:
Thanks for quick response. I guess what I am driving at (excluding external DVD recorders for now), if I record on the dish HDr, the HD/SD and 5.1 audio for OTA local stations, will I always be able to play them back as HD/SD and 5.1 audio or does it depend on various flags for copy right protection for each program on the various network station?
Thanks,
ISG
Mark:
I have been looking for the last 12 months for a DVD recorder with 5.1 dolby input.
Apparently because of DRM, we are never going to see one.
Therefore, I am hoping the vip 622 HDr will serve this purpose. With the advent of external USB HDr's we could build a library wirh both SD/HD and 5.1 dolby sound tracks

So far no sign of the quality being any less for 'later' replays than live plays on E*'s DVRs. It isn't likely that "5.1" playback will expire and you will be left with stereo.
You do lose quality transferring content to the PocketDish but from what E* has shown so far, external hard drive storage is 100% quality ... not recompressed or stripped of anything you would get if you just left the content on the main hard drive.

James,
You seem to be fairly well informed on the forthcoming external USB HD support – and please excuse the redundancy if my question has already been addressed in an earlier discussion –
Since I have two 622s, can you tell me if I will be able to move the external HD drive between the two receivers and watch the content thereon regardless of which unit did the original recording? I’m hoping that eventually the ability to watch DVR content across a private LAN will become a feature of the Ethernet port on the 622s, but in the meantime I’d be happy if I could just “Sneaker Net” an external HD between the two.
Thanks,

If my memory is working right from earlier this year the storage will be tied to the receiver at first but E* will eventually make it per account (the way you want it).

I remember that Charlie said (last year or early this year) that the storage would be tied to the account. No disagreement from me if it is to be phased in...

I prefer your memory. :) We will see when the 'product' is released.

Thanks for the responses guys -- Though admittedly wishfulness on my part, it would be nice to think that it may happen. To me it just seems like a logical and useful extension to the 622's feature set. But with all the concerns over content protection, etc. I can certainly understand their hesitation and potential avoidance. Just wait and see what happens, I guess.
