Wal-Mart selling Dell desktops

I was in a local Wal-Mart last night and they had two models of Dell Dimension E521 computers for sale. This, just a week or so after it was announced that Dell was going to team up with Wal-Mart.

The two packages both had Athlon 64X2 dual core processors (3600's as I recall), 1 Gig of DDR SDRAM, integrated graphics (with available PCI Express graphics slot), large SATA hard drives (I think one was 250 gig and the other was 320), DVD burner, Windows Vista Home Premium, Works 8.5, and other software bundled. The one with the smaller hard drive didn't have a monitor included and was priced at $498. The one with the larger hard drive includes a 19 inch LCD flat panel monitor and a 13 in 1 media readerand is priced at $698.

Why? This is a model that's sold online (if you spec it the same). You get the same Dell support that you'd get if you order it online. Of course, if you want to improve graphics or add more memory and not do it yourself, then online is the way to go. But if you want to boost performance, it's probably cheaper to order memory & graphics adapter elsewhere.
I'm not pimping for either Dell or Wal-Mart. Actually, I'm not a big Dell Fan. :nono: :D

Last week a neighbor gave some specs on a Dell system and asked me what I could it for, through my Dell account.

I priced it out and he told me to go ahead and order it.

He works at Wal-Mart and gets a discount, but he could still buy the system through me cheaper than he could from Wal-Mart.

If your company purchases a lot of Dells (or you know someone who works for a company that does) and they are set up in Dell's Employee Purchase Program, you can save even more. They have no problems if you purchase for family or friends.

We're in the camp that's had good luck with Dells. Four laptops currently in use and a couple of desktops.

I have yet to see any at my Wal-Mart. I will definitely keep an eye out though. I usually build my own systems but I really enjoyed the Dell I had. Thanks for the heads up on this by the way.

The Wal-Mart models are members of a family of computers you can buy online from Dell. The big difference is that they are preconfigured. They carry Dell's normal inhome service warranty. (but I still wouldn't buy a Dell, regardless of their reputation)

It's funny how people prefer one brand of computer over another. All the major "assemblers" buy their components from the same plants in China.

Dave: Not entirely true. Dell uses custom motherboards designed to their specifications. This is my big gripe with them. It makes it quite difficult to do hardware upgrades, particularly in the Dimension series.

I know, just tired of everything from China these days. I have a Dell Demension 8400, great machine so far. I have learned a bit of the Indian language though...
