View Full Version : Fog Interfering With Signal?

Usually installing in SoFla, I recently put in some installs in the NC Foothills, and had some recurring issues with signal loss. Upon troubleshooting one slight to moderately foggy morning I saw the signal strength considerably low. Strengths appeared to increase as the sun rose and burned off some of the fog. Do Northern Dish customers experience this issue daily with fog? Low signals in the mornings in addition to the normal rain outages? :icon_cool

Well... since fog is essentially a cloud formed at ground level... no surprise that it interferes with signals.

Not sure I've noticed around here... but then my signal levels are pretty high and I usually only lose service with those dark black storm clouds overhead... normal clouds and even rain don't kill me... just the dark clouds.

What is your signal strength without clouds/fog? It should be above 90 for 110 above 100 for 119.

Could have condensation inside lnb cap.

Both signal strengths are above the ones you quoted, and a new LNB didn't produce different readings. My question basically is, when educating a customer on their new satellite system, do you basically include fog along with torrential downpours and lightning storms as one of those things that tend to disrupt the satellite signal? Most people understand and have heard the stories about rain and lightning. Cloudy days affect the signal somewhat, but with fog/clouds being closer to the ground and LNB, does that produce significant reductions in the signal? From say 115 on 119W down to 45-50? :icon_cool

Fog does not affect (or effect???) my service (or possibly a negligable amount.). Neither does snow, rain, or sleet. Just the big bopper storms.

I have installed dishes in Michigan on foggy days and have not noticed any effect on signal strengths. Not on DishNetwork or Directv.

Must be Bermuda Triangle Fog.

fog is composed of mainly tiny droplets, and attenuation should be proportional to (droplet diameter)^6....i.e., a few big droplets will attenuate much more than many tiny droplets (hence why its typically large storms that knock service out)....I'd look for other answers....
