View Full Version : disk space question
I have had my HR20-700 since December, and initially performed a reformat to be safe as many had recommended at the time. I have finally watched most of my HD backlog of recordings, but it still only shows 51% free. I added up the HD recordings that are left and it is under 10 hours. There may be about double that in SD.
It seems to have "lost" much of the space that should be available. Is anyone seeing similar results? I would hate to do another reformat to lose all the scheduled recordings, but I came close to running out of space in May and would rather do it this summer before the fall premiers run me out of space again!

HD recordings use alot more space than SD. The HR20 will hold between 20 and 50 hours of HD content (depending on Mpeg2 or Mpeg4) or 200 hours of SD. It would appear to me that your indicator bar is very close to being accurate. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

I was thinking the least amount of MPEG2 content would be about 30 hours based on HD Tivo specs, which is why I figured only 50% being free was abnormal. Most of the recordings remaining are from HBO and HDNET, so they would be using more space, but still I would not expect that much.

I have found that HD MEG 2 takes about 2% of the the disk space for every 30 minutes recorded.
For SD recordings, I see 120 minutes of recording takes up around 1% of disk space.
I have not been able to identify the percent to minutes recorded ratio for MPEG 4 yet.
Hope that helps.

Another test is to use the Mark and Delete (without the delete) to get a sense of what each group of programs take of the existing space. As you Mark items, they available disk space bar cross hatches in proportion to the amount of space used by the marked programming.

Let me amend my previous post. HD Mpeg 2 recordings is 1% of disk space for every 30 minutes of recording.
Sorry, I goofed.

Thanks for that tip! I haven't tried the "Mark and delete" function.

Ditto, I tried mark/delete once but did not notice the marking on the time bar. I'll try it again.

How do you mark and delete?

How do you mark and delete?
From the MyPlayList screen, hit Menu. It's one of those context sensitive menu items.
