Can I scan ota locals with the hr20-700 and will it provide guide info on the locals.

Ok I have my old tivo which is the hughes hd tivo I bought it like 2 yrs ago.. Now with that tivo I would scan ota locals and set season pass on all my fav shows that i saw in the guide.. are u telling me that I will not be able to scan for ota locals with my new hr20-700 and I will not receive a guide with shows information that i can set certain shows for season pass.. I will always prefer local ota rec over direct tv locals in hd due to the quality... a. can i scan for ota locals if not then how do i get the ota locals show up and b.. will i see a guide info on all shows for my ota locals where i can set for season pass.. also has anyone compared the ota signal tuner from the hr 20-700 to the hd hughes tivo.. is the tuner about the same...

Unfortunately, the HR20 does not yet scan for OTA channels. But you do get local OTA's with the HR20, it's just that you only get the channels currently programmed into the Tribune db for your zip code/DMA. You will have guide data, the local OTA's are just predetermined for now.

...and there are errors in the database so a bunch of us have missing channels, mis-mapped channels, wrong guide data, etc. etc.

IMHO, this is the most glaringly lacking feature in the HR20.

There are plenty of mistakes in the Tribune supplied data, which will render the HR20 unable to receive a channel that may present a strong signal and would be received easily if the HR20 could only "scan" the airwaves like every other ATSC receiver on the planet can do!

In addition to the mistakes in the Tribune data, digital television is still a "young" technology, new channels are coming on line rapidly, existing channels make changes regularly, all of which "break" the HR20's ability to receive the channels until Tribune catches up with the changes.

In post-Katrina New Orleans, changes were almost weekly as the channels jury-rigged this way and that, changing to different temporary transmitters and changing frequencies regularly as they struggled to stabilize their damaged physical plants, and while it's calmed a bit, it's still going on! My HR10's ability to "scan" was the work-around for this, the HR20 just gets lost.

Thankfully, DirecTV carries 3 of my 4 major networks in HD and their feed will almost surely remain stable, even though one of those 3 channels' OTA signal (ABC) is still on a temporary frequency (and will move later this year) while another (NBC) has no OTA signal at all yet.

ok let me get this right... my local ota channels are predetermined by the tribune.. so are u saying that if i setthe hr20 on season pass for a local ota channel program to record all season will it have any interruptions.. with my old hd tivo i never missed a single recording through season pass through ota as the signal was never lost or the guide was never misinformed... so is it safe to season pass all of my favorite ota programs with the hr20 ota tuner...

No, it's not the programming data that is the issue, it is the inclusion of local TV stations in the database that is the issue, along with stations that do exist, but are mapped to the wrong frequency.

If the channel exists an is propery mapped in the database, then everything will very likely be fine. I see by your profile that your in or near Miami (FL i assume). Maybe someone nearby can chime in on the state of things in that DMA.

Oh, and scanning is a no-brainer. C'mon.

ok so if my channels are there in the tribune does that mean that i will be able to record on a season pass my programs on that channel just like i did with my old hd tivo and never miss a recording.. im beginning to think that it might be a mistake to let go of my hughes hd tivo which scanned for all my ota channels.....

To try to give you your answer: you should be "fine" if your local channel is there in the first place.

yeah should be fine lets hope that the tribune in miami is up to date.. I guess one of the things that i have going for me is that miami is a big city..

FWIW, I am using the HR20-100 in Atlanta, and it has all the OTA channels correctly mapped, except for some piddly local advertising channel and maybe one of the religious channels. But all of the networks are correct, even Univision and Pax. No problems with any recordings so far.

Anyone in the philly area using OTA and finding their locals mapped correctly? Getting an HR20 next week and am hoping all will be well.
