I switched my parents ovr to Directv a little while ago and set them up with basic D11 receivers (4). They recently purchased an HD TV and so I thought I might upgrade them to an HD DVR. A late fathers day gift. Any thoguhts on what to get? Is the HR 20 the only choice out there? Is it similar to the Dish 942 in that it feeds two TVs so it would replace two D11's? I have heard some disturbing things about lag between channel changes, reboots, etc. Any other choices out there? Also what dish is required for the HR 20? Currently they have a triple LNb, but I have heard they would need a 5 lnb? Or is that only requireed to receive OTA hi def? They live nowhere near a major center and I doubt any OTA hi def woudl be available to tehm. Thanks for any replies

The HR20 is the only HD DVR D* offers. You can use the 3-LNB but you will need a 5-LNB to get the offerings from D* later this year, and to get your locals in HD.
The lag as gotten better, but it can be subjective. Just set "native off" in setup and that should speed it up.

Welcome to dbstalk. The HR20 is the only HD DVR that D* offers that will pick up the new upcoming HD channels that will be coming in Sept. You will also need a 5LB dish to get the new HD national and local channels that will be on the new satellites. The HR20 will only output only one thing at a time on all outputs. If you want different channels in all rooms you will need a box in each room. The HR20 can pickup OTA channels provided that they are in guide. Check out this site to see what HD OTA channels are available in your area. http://www.antennaweb.org

No. You need a separate receiver at each TV. The HR20 has two tuners - it can record one show while you are watching a different one. But it only outputs one video source at a time. There are multiple output connections, and you could feed a second tv from it, but you would have to watch the same program on both tv's.
