View Full Version : Any spotbeam footprint maps for the Ka satellites?

I'm trying to figure out how large the coverage area is for the spotbeam that is sending down the New Orleans HD local channels. (Someone else helpfully found a map showing the coverage for the SD channels.)

Any idea if such a map exists?

Even DIRECTV had some troubles mapping it as there are dead spots in some markets.

D10, D11 and D12 should be much easier to map.

It contains a link to one. While the thread does warn that the map is based on the SD local spotbeams, I suspect that the HD local spotbeams are close to the same.

I doubt "close" is the right word.
Different SATs, antenna types, technology, etc. Almost light years apart.

We're all here to help.
I've seen the SD [Ku] spot beam maps, & know the Ka are just too much different to use Ku as a comparison.

I'm going to Lafayette this weekend and will be taking an H20 with me so I'll see if the spot reaches that far away. I know the SD spots do.
I'll let you know next week how it goes.

Yeah Brott got busy and hasn't updated his site.
To my knowledge there is no spot beam footprint map for the new Ka birds.
Since they use a phased array antenna, D* can change the spread of the beam at will, unlike the older antennas that were fixed.

A few months ago I house sat about 150 miles from home. They have D*, but no DVR, so I took our HR20 and was able to receive our spot beam, locals and all. Where I visited their spot beam came from 103 and my home sat is 99, not that it matters, but they do overlap in some markets. My signal on 99 was low (50's) but we had good weather.

I have seven transponders from the two SATs that are above 95%. This doesn't mean I can get the channels from anyone but "mine", just that some beams are for DMAs over 300 miles away. The phased array spot beams are much smaller than the older spot beams and so D* can reuse the transponder frequencies more for other parts of the country without having crosstalk.
