View Full Version : HR20 Deleted show while viewing...
Last night I was watching a previously recorded episode of CSI. It was my oldest of 5 recordings... I started viewing and within the first few minutes the scene was set and I was getting ready for what looked like a great show.... Then all of a sudden I see my screen flicker, go blank, then return to the "List"...
I then noticed that it was 9PM EST and my HR20 was recording CSI. It seems that it can only have 5 so the one I was in the middle of viewing was deleted to make room for the episode about to be recorded.
UGGGHHHHHH... This machine is so frustrating!!!!

I have read of this happening, though it has never happened to me. You can go into your series link and set it to keep up to "all episodes", so that this doesn't happen. Default, if you don't change it, is 5 episodes.
Wow. That's a huge bug. Tivo doesn't delete #1 until #6 is finished recording, and knows better than to delete anything while you're watching it.

Yeah, I realize that is the default.. I just can't believe the unit is so poorly designed that it would delete a show I was watching without any warning. It is like the designers and programmers were working on their first job with no real life experience to guide them.

The actual bug is that the logic for "keep 5" is wrong, or at least the wording in onscreen menus is incomplete.
As implemented in the HR20, "keep 5" keeps the five most recent showings, always bumping off the oldest to record newer, always keeping a total of five.
As implemented by TiVo, "keep 5" keeps the five oldest showings, never deleting any and never recording new episodes unless there are less than five (because the user deleted one or more).
Either the wording needs to be changed to alert users to this difference in behavior, or the behavior needs to change.

IIRC - that is only the case on TiVo, if you have also marked the recordings/Season Pass... as Keep Until I Delete.
If you don't have them KUID, it will record episode #6, bumping off the oldest.. (but it doesn't delete it while you are watching it)
I haven't used "keep XX" for a long time on my TiVos, so I may just be fuzzy on the actual behavior. We'll have to wait for someone who uses this all the time on TiVo to confirm how it works! :)

There's nothing wrong with the logic--it makes more sense to keep the newest 5 episodes. I also recall that's the way TiVo works.
But yes, it shouldn't delete an episode you're actually watching, at least not without a warning, such as the one you get when tuners have to change to start recording a scheduled show.

Agreed, and that was my point...

Earl is correct (as usual). I use my Tivo this way all the time for my kids shows, it keeps the 2 (or whatever you have set) newest recordings unless you have KUID set.
So where's the eraser on this forum?? :D
I was getting the TiVo KUD setting mixed with the KAM setting ... sorry about that!

I had a similar problem...I had my remote set for Radio Frequency and so did my neighbor. He was deleting from his playlist AND MY PLAYLIST!
It took me weeks to realize what the problem was.
