Hello,
I am thinking of getting a new DVD player.
What I’m looking for is one that will play:
MP3’s
SACD
DVD-audio
Blu-ray
HD-DVD
Photo CD
Standard CDs
Standard DVDs
I’ve yet to find a player that will handle all of this.
I suspect that a play would be backward compatible to be able to play standard DVD and CD’s.
If anyone knows of one please let me know.
Peace,
Leprechuan

LG and Samsung (announced) will be selling dual format players, but at a premium price, $1000 for the LG and an unknown price for the Samsung. (expected out by 12/07)

Sony has a 5 Disc Progressive Scan DVD Player that will play standard DVDs and CDs, burned CDs and DVDs, MP3 Data CDs, Photo CDs and SACDs. And any DVD player can play DVD-A discs if you don't mind the Dolby Digital or DTS track instead of 5.1 channel analog. This is not an Upconversion player and should be near the end of it's life by now, but I think Best Buy still carries it. Retail is $155, IIRC.
Or you can shell out a lot of cash for an HD DVD, BD or combo player.

I'd say do like most of us are doing, wait until the format war is either settled or calms down a little. At the same time prices naturally will be coming down quickly. Then again you can get a HD Player for under $300 now and Sony has announced a BR Player that will be under $399 Retail that is probably shipping now. It will only be a matter of time before you will be able to get an all in one device for under $500.

Anybody else think they could BOTH fail, like SACD and DVD-Audio did?

Possible but I doubt it. SACD and DVD-A were never promoted very well. Walk into a Best Buy and after 15 minutes of searching you'll find a very small section dedicated to hi rez audio while hardly any titles, not much you'll like and even less you recognize. On your way looking for the Hi Rez audio section, you’ve probably passed that nice Sony Bravia XBR displaying a CGI movie on Blu Ray several times.
I blame the lack of acceptance of SACD and DVD-A on the RiAA. No promotion and lack of content , HD DVD and Blu Ray are just the opposite.
Halfway through 2007 and the predominate audio format is still the same one that's been around for upwards of 25 years. :nono:
