View Full Version : HR20 issues

Joined the HD world about 3 months ago. Have had an HR10-250 for all of that time and an HR20 for the last 8 weeks or so. I thought that using a non-Tivo DVR would be like riding a bicycle without a seat, but it turns out that the HR20 "ain't so bad". The HR10 has barely been touched in the past month (we like our HD locals!). Overall, I'm very happy with the HR20 and I understand that it's come a long way over the past several months... Thanks to all of you who suffered through the rough times and have helped DirecTV fix defects and drive improvements into it!

I've had a couple of issues...
1) It locked up tighter than a drum about a month ago. I tried everything I could think of via remotes (both my Harmony 880 and the remote that came with the HR20). Thanks to the "avoid the red reset button" thread, I knew the solution of last resort was the red button and that did indeed reset it. This has not recurred.

2) Watching a recorded show last week and there were 3 or 4 noticable dropouts of audio and video (no sound, screen went totally black, not like digital signal loss/pixelation). These were just for a second. I realize this could have been with the feed from the network (think it was NBC) or D*, but wondering if others have experienced similar, or it could be related to #3 below?

3) Occasionally I see some "stuttering" in a recorded show that looks like digital signal loss / pixelation. I'm pretty certain this is only in HD content, but does span the MPEG2 and 4 channels. I would normally suspect rain fade or the like, but my signal strengths are in the high-90s pretty much across the board (kudos to my installer who was up on the roof in a moderate drizzle) and we have had VERY little rain here in the Twin Cities over recent weeks. It almost seems like the issue is due to a very temporary I/O or CPU utilization spike in the unit. /shrug

Just wondering if I should bother starting to log "I'm having issues with my HR20" calls to D*, or if these types of issues are common? Thanks in advance for any responses or comments.

:welcome_s to DBSTalk.

Hopefully you won't need to hit the red button for a while. [been months for me].
The "black" screen I think was the other end & not your HR-20 as I've seen this a couple of times lately.

Not quite sure of your #3, but it might be do to workload. I don't see it [if at all], but have seen my locals do something close. A loss of a bit or two that were important.

VOS, yes, but D does it for you everytime you get a patch.

There's good and bad to this...as anytime you flash memory there's always a risk of corruption or problems.

The good is that you clear up the effects of memory leaks, etc...for awhile.

I'm not sure what the "yes" relates to, as I understand your reply [I think] but it doesn't go with my reply to the OP.

I believe his "yes" was some sort of way of saying that you may not be doing RBR's but you're still rebooting when we get a CE. At least that's what I read it to be. I could be wrong, it wasn't exactly clear.

Ah...then it must have been to #1: box locks up requiring use of the RBR to gain control.
If that was it then NO it doesn't have anything to do with my reply.
