Hey Everyone --

Been lurking trying to figure out how to get my setup to be seen on my local net. Wanted to share with folks something I found that was critical to making it work. I went through a ton of trial and error, but I think I figured out at least what one problem is for people having connection problems.

My problem was like most people, as hard as I tried, I couldn't get my PC to see the HR20, nor could my router. Even after my router could see the HR20, my PC still wasn't seeing it under the WMP11 shared media tab. I tried, tried, and tried again to no avail.

Here's what I found was critical --- STATIC IPs --- You have to make sure that your PC, the WGA54G and the HR20 are all using IPs in your routers static range, at least that's the case with the WRT54G. Once I turned off DHCP on my PC and gave it a static IP and then gave the HR20 an IP in the static range --- BINGO, everything started working. (Of course I had to red-button reset the HR20), but that was all that was left that it needed.

** This might be the reason some people say "I just plugged it in and it worked" and those that say "huh?!?!"

So my router has static from 192.168.1.2 -- 200, Then my WGA54G 192.168.1.250, my PC 192.168.1.251, and the HR20 192.168.1.252 -- The other odd thing that might throw people off, is that once you plug the HR20 into the WGA54, at least on my network, I can no longer access the 192.168.1.250 address -- it disappears. If you need to access the web config, unplug the ethernet cable from the WGA54 unplug its power and plug it back in, after it resets it should be accessible via web again -- that's an odd thing.

Also, be sure that UpNP service is on in the router and on the PC.

Anyway, hope that helps some wayward souls!!

I'm glad this works for you. What worked for me was dynamic addresses. To configure everything I plugged the WGA54G into my WRT54GS. I then looked at what address the router assigned to it and then pointed the web browser of my PC to that address. I configured the WGA that way to use DHCP and also pointed it to my router's wireless gateway name. I use WAP so I had to set the WAP passphrase. Once configured, I went to the HR20 and plugged in the WGA. It all works good.

Static .vs. Dynamic IPs should not be a factor. The really critical thing is to enable uPnP in the router setup.

piercer Welcome to the forum and we are glad to have you here.

I think if you go into your WGA54G and turn the clone mode off, you will be able to access the adapter again via the browser setup page.

Other than that your network looks good and I am glad you got it working.

I am using a WRT54GL with DDWRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com) firmware. I just plugged it all in and it worked fine. Just another option to try.

Worth mentioning, there are two revisions of the WGA54g. The current one can be identified by a "Rev.2" sticker somewhere on it.

I had the original revision and was never able to get it work right... despite trying static and dynamic. It just never worked right.

I'm glad that the OP is having success, this is just information for other WGA users who might still be having issues.

I was able to get the WGA54G working by disabling the MAC address cloning feature on the adapter. After I turned that off I could access the Internet everytime from my HR-20.

I also think the cloning should be turned off.

Could you get the HR20 to see the media server?

If you would like for your HR20 to comply/work to certain expectations, I encourage you to read and post your opinion in the thread...
