My son just had a slimline installed to replace his 3 LNB and the installer same he could mount it in the same spot but he would need a Heavy Duty Brace that cost him $50.00 is this normal.

NO! He is trying to pocket some money. They have a pile of that stuff on their trucks that they don't use but should. Don't let him get ripped off. Possible a special install, but I highly doubt it.

When I had my dish replaced this past February, they offered me a $50.00 brace(installed) also. Which I took, because it can get pretty windy around here. The payment was made to the local satellite supplier, not the installer. I agree, it was a little pricey but worth it.

The entire mount assembly, with braces probably doesn't cost $50.00. It is just stamped steel, no special castings or machining, just stamped metal, very inexpensive.

My slimline dish was installed with the main mast and (2) support arms at no additional costs. Sounds like a scam to me...

The only special mount I have seen is for under an overhang. If you son's is a wall mount or a roof mount there should be nothing special required. Maybe the correct fasteners would be all. The braces shown in your example are NO extra charge, be sure they use them.

The braces are called monopoles, there should be two of them installed at no extra charge with all roof installs and most others (except if the dish is mounted on a pole set in concrete).
If the installer charged you for these you should report it to DirecTV.

YES!!! They put three on mine for free.

However,
I charge extra to put those pigs on roofs..if it is even possible. You may have a chance assembling them on the roof. The mono poles are just more holes in the roof. They are now shipped with the dish.
Consider a 2" steel pole and eighty pounds of concrete on the ground with the cable dug in for around $75.00 (up) depending on the length of the dig in.
There is a reason why the demonstration demo was shot on the ground.

I am no installer and would never consider myself anything more than an amature regarding installing dishes. I have installed a few for friends and family and I would mount a dish anywhere but on a roof. Shingles, tile, metal, etc should never have their integrity compromised. IMHO

Any pictures of this mount?
Was it an undereve mount or a corner wall S-Tube mount? If so, then I can see the $50, if not, then he got scammed.

I had to buy my monopoles. The installer didn't install them...along with a few other things he should have done. I called him and he said they didn't come with the dish and I would have to pay $50 a piece for them. I called him a few things that traced back to his lineage and his momma, and went to another installer and bought two for $10 each that were actually better poles than the ones provided by D*. I should have reported his butt.

On the installation end of D*'s business it seems as though it is a free for all. There is NO conformity and the (most) installers could seem to care less about their job, the customer or D*. Customers get lied to and cheated on a very regular basis. I like D*, but this needs to be addressed. This situation must be costing them (us) big time.

davring,
It is rough on both sides. Installers get it just as bad from customers and DTV installation contractors.
In my experience 90% of all installations (done by me) go in without issue and are still DTV customers after several years. Of the other 10%, No Line of Sight, credit issues, equipment failures, non standard installation items that fail,.......and maybe 2% customer dishonesty account for the rest.
Of the several installation companies I have installed for, including a DTV HSP only two paid every penny on time and showed an interest in being accurate in their dealings with installers. The last two just stole the money. I have a court judgment against one and if you can get Frank Genco back to Maryland I would be glad to speak to him.
DTV knows all this.

I install for 3 different companies and none of them send monopoles with the HD dishes.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that mount can be used with a 5 lnb (Slimline) dish. The pipe does not look big enough and if it were it would require MUCH more bracing than what is visable in the photo.
I just looked at the photo again, it looks like it might be the bottom of a Slimline. Still does not look sturdy enough.

man does the dish move around in wind gusts? I agree with davring it may be fine in steady/no wind but I can see it moving side to side in moderate wind.

Back to your original question. I can see where that dish mount could very well be an extra $50.00, but it sure looks like it would need more bracing than what is visable.

Undereve mount. $50 seems reasonable to me. NOT part of a standard install.

The Installer said the brace is so strong you could hang on it if you wanted.

The brace may be, but the tail end of a rafter is not that stable. I would get monopoles installed if I was you.

In the early installs of the AT9, they were NOT included, they were scarce as well. They went for around $30 a pair, I ordered mine from valueelectronics. From everything I have seen and heard they are now packaged with the dishes, but there could still be dish stock out there from b4 the time they were included.
