I am just a guy with a 2 Bedroom house, and I look at these setups that some of you have, and they are absolutely INSANE. This isn't 1 or 2 of you either, but numerous people! I was curious of a couple of things.

#1 - What the heck do you have all of these to? This isn't like 1 or 2 people either, but LOTS of you. Do most of you just have 4 BR houses, and you are running to all BR's and a Living room?

#2 - How in the HELL do you get around the mirroring fees??? Don't you have to pay for mirroring for each and every receiver??? I know old Primestar customers don't have that problem...

Anyway, just curious!!!

(1) Many of us have more than one DVR in a room. And a DVR in every room. It's the only option if people want every one's TV to operate independently.

(2) We pay them.

I went for many years with only one receiver in the whole house with E*. After I switched to D*, I kinda went wild, with equipment being so inexpensive and mirroring fees so cheap.

I have an HR20 in the living room. I have another HR20 in a bedroom and an R15 in a 2nd bedroom. I will be running 2 lines to another bedroom so I can hook my other R15 back up. Then I have an HR20 and 2 H20's in my basement for football season. NFL Ticket is great. I will be soon adding another HR20 in the basement so I can watch a 4th game and during the fall and spring some nights there are 3 or 4 shows on at one time that I want to watch and as of right now I cannot record all of them in that room and that is where I do all of my TV watching.

For your second question I just pay them.

I used to have four or five DTivos and HDTivos on my account but recently switched over to FIOS. Both my kids are either away at school or living on their own so I didn't need full-time receivers for them. My wife could care less about anything more technical than the ability to turn on the TV and change channels, let alone operate a DVR so she's fine with a standard set top box.

I had multiple DVRs in the same room, mainly because I had an insane number of season passes and I liked to pad all of my recordings so I needed a lot of tuners to allow the padding and avoid any conflicts. It was a bit of a juggling act to distribute the season passes but I managed it somehow. I did have a couple of DTivos that had MRV so my son could use it in his room while he was home from school during the summer. I used the MRV feature to transfer the recordings on his DTivo to mine so I could watch them on my main TV.

I can see why some people have numerous DVRs because the only difference in cost is the $5.99 DVR fee, so it just makes sense to switch out all standard receivers with DVRs.

I think the comment about BMore being single has more to do with having time on his hands and money in his pockets because most married guys like me don't have either one.

We have two R15s in our family room controlled by a RF remote control and pay one mirroring fee.

To see programming on other TVs in the house, we use a Sony MRD-D1 multi room distribution system The same RF remote works in all the rooms and we avoid the issue of wondering on which DVR in what room we recorded a program.

On our home theater we have 2 DVRs and used to have an old HD receiver which I finally retired (but now have a FTA receiver in it's place).
One DVR in the patio.
We have no TV in the bedroom, used to but found out we just never used it so we scrapped it.
We also have no TV in the "living room".
Guess maybe we don't qualify. ;)

Small 3 Bedroom house.

A chicken in every pot and a TV in nearly every room. With cable going the way it is, we'd either need a STB from the cable company or a receiver from DIRECTV .

And since the mirroring fees for a DVR are the same as a receiver, (until DIRECTV develops the home media center with clients) might was well make every receiver a DVR.

Cheers,
Tom

In my den HT/Sports bar I use 5 TVs with 5 HD DVRs all DVRs are hooked up to the HD TVs. The other 3 TVs are CRTs, 1 TV with DVR in the living room. When it's not football season I cut back to 4 TVs in the den.

I stocked up on TIVOs when DSR7000's were $35 each from PTVUpgrade or where ever it was. I also have a stack of R15's. We were to get 4 R15's originally, well the installation company that came out went out of buisness the day before our install. So a second set of receivers were sent out to us, we were allowed to keep them as long as we activated them (so we activated them for a month, then turned them off).

I just moved into a one bedroom apartment after moving out of a house.

My current set-up:
One TV - 60" Sony Wega LCD
4 HR20s and 1 HR10-250 running through an HDMI Switch to one HDMI input on the Sony
2 HR10-250s connected to the two component inputs on the Sony
2 SD-DVR80s (one jacked to over 200 hrs) connected via S-Video to the Sony

2 Series 2 Stand-alone TiVos recording off of Life-Line cable (back-up recordings as I have Lifetime service on them anyway) and 1 Series 2 Stand-alone TiVo with a DVD burner running of a D10/Life-Line cable (I used this to record and burn stuff - mostly MMA - for my nephew while he was serving in Iraq) and Lifetime on that, too. All of these stand-alones are connected to the Sony through a VCR using coax.

Plus I have a DVD player connected to the Sony as well.

The collection basically evolved over time. I bought one of the HR10-250s when they came out. Got another discounted through D* a while later. Both are owned. Got another HR10-250 free from D* (leased). Also got an HR20 for $99 back when they came out. When I moved, they told me they needed to upgrade my three HR10-250s. NO CHARGE! Couldn't really say no.

One HR20 for each major network. Same with the HR10s (except for ABC - I find I watch next to nothing on ABC). Plus I utilize all of them for HDNet Movies, Universal HD, HBO HD, etc. And come football season, I record ALL games so I can flip around and catch all the important stuff. And I think there was maybe one Sunday in the last several years where I didn't have someone over watching ST with me.

SD DVRs cover poker, Chiller, other SD channels, etc. to save space on my HD DVRs.

The cable fed TiVos have saved me a few times when really bad weather knocked out my satellite reception, but I'll admit that I mostly just wind up sorting through and deleting things that I had watched already on another box.

I also have two DSR6000s, two SD-DVR40s, and one more SD-DVR80 on the sideline right now.

Mirroring fees? Just pay 'em like everyone else.

By the way, I deplore Universal Remotes - don't own one. Thank goodness for TiVos Remote Address codes. Now, if the HR20s would just do that! :)

Several years ago, we had 2 D*tivo's in the living room, and standard receivers in the following rooms: office, master bedroom, game room, HT, guest bedroom, workout/scrapbook room, loft (computer area).

That was 9 receivers in the house.

I've since converted to a distribution system and only have the 2 D*tivo's in the living room and they send the signal to the other TV's in the house.

So, to answer your questions:

1. It's a 5 bedroom house (and office and home theater and loft/computer station.
2. I get around the mirroring fees by distributing.

I have only a HR20 and a H20, but feed 5 TVs with the two of them.

I feed HD or SD outputs of the two receivers to baluns and output the baluns into the Cat6 wiring, that runs throughout the house. I wired the house with 4 Cat6 runs to each room (HD requires 2 Cat6 lines to get the entire HD signal and analog audio from the receiver to the TV).

With just my wife and I at home, we use the two RF remotes and can feed the signal to anyone of the 5 sets.

Man, I feel like a poser reading all of yall's setups. But here goes mine with older pics, but you can see where the D* boxes have been upgraded/replaced.

LR - HR20 and H20 connected to Mitsu 42" RPTV. pic below - middle.
Master BR - HR20 connected to 30" Sharp Aquos LCD. pic - right
Game - Deactivated Hughes e86 connected to 32" Samsung 4x3. (Yes they still made them in 2003 when I bought it.) :) . pic - left
Office - D* SD-Tivo connected to 13" tv
Toddler's room - Deactivated Hughes e86 connected to 17" Phillips LCD. (Great deal at BB, bought for the future and us watching sports in there together. But Baby and Little Einstein's DVD plays almost non-stop)
Guest - Deactivated Hughes e86 connected to older 19" Sharp SD

Only 4 stb's active on account. LR, master, game, toddler rooms all HDTV

Now...staab I about had a conniption when I saw all of your tv's. And JLuc, good gawd man, all those connected to 1 tv?

Wow to you both. Ya'lls bills must be pushing $200 a month.

Actually I'm only 5'10", my wife is 5', and Landon is 37" :)

We put them up a little higher because we knew our children would eventually try to mess with them. It just so happens the very first RPTV I looked at was the only one that fit in the nook. It has about 1 inch of room at the top. Proof of this is Landon likes the little blue power light on our H20 and HR20 and likes to turn it off/on. Now he's become fasinated with the power button on the A/V reciever.

But they were a bitch to hang up and put up. Woo-hoo, more room to vacuum for me! :D

2-R15 in 2 bedrooms
1-D10 in the garage
