Hi, newbie here.

I posted the questions below on TivoCommunity.com. Folks there told me to try this site instead. Any help would be appreciated.

------------------------------

I have two Series 1 Tivos that date back to the year 2000.

I've used them with Cable TV at first and then switched over to DirecTV two years ago.

I recently took advantage of free DVR upgrades for the two DirecTV receivers that are connected to the two Tivos. The installation will take place in two weeks.

What I would like to know is what new features the DirecTV DVRs will give me over the older Series 1 Tivos. I don't even know the models of the new DVRs they are giving me.

1) Can I connect it to my network (via my Linksys router) to view photos and play music that are located on one of my PCs?

2) Can I do online scheduling?

3) Can I do multi-room viewing?

4) Anything that the TiVo can't do that these DVRs can?

Welcome to DBSTalk!

1) Yes.
2) Not yet
3) Not yet
4) "Dual buffers" is the feature that most former Tivo users miss the most when switching to the newer DirecTV DVRs.

Check out the HR20 Forum for more information.

He won't be used to dual buffers since he was using an SA tivo.

You won't have suggestions and they are working on autocorrection after FF and REW (in testing now). Not sure what was on the Series 1s, so not sure what you will miss.

You will be getting a much better picture as the stream is recorded directly and not reencoded and you will get two tuners for recording.

The answers to your questions depends on whether you are getting the SD or HD DVR. Litzdog's answers are correct for the HD unit. The SD unit answers are no, no, no, and you will miss dual buffers.

Just got the R15 installed yesterday. Haven't had much time to interact with it yet or read the manuals though.

Have a few questions:

1) What can you do with the USB port at this time (or in the future)? The manual says "FOR FUTURE USE".

2) One major difference I noticed between the R15 and my Series 1 TiVo. I noticed that the recorder doesn't record by default. In other words, with my old unit if I turned the TV on at 10:20pm and it was on a local new channel, I could rewind the last 20 min to see the weather report. With the new unit, it seems like when you shut it off, its actually stops recording. Is there a way to change this behavior?

3) Regarding the "not yet" replies earlier in this thread, are there ETAs for these features? How will you know when they are available. And for that matter, why aren't they available yet?

4) How can I connect the R15 to my LAN? What equipment/software do I need? I have a 4-port WAP that uses cable internet service.
