Hi everyone,

My Vip622's modem keeps the phone line off hook. I've tried a reboot (holding the power button in) which didn't help. It doesn't matter to me that it cannot connect a phone line except that I'm going to be charged the monthly fee beginning next month. Tech support wants to send me a replacement unit thereby causing me to lose all my recordings. Any suggestions?

I know this is pure speculation, but I was thinking I might be able to transfer recordings to an external USB drive (in August) with the current receiver then be able to play them on the replacement receiver. However, I'm concerned that this might not be possible since Dish might disable this sort of capability via DRM on the content.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jim

Why do you think that if they are going to make the USB active to use an external HDD will you not be able to do the same thing w/ the replacement that you would be able to do w/ this one. Both will have the same s/w & f/w versions when the USB becomes active. Face it you have a dead modem and it needs to be replaced the only way to do this is for it to be returned. Get the replacement. I just had my C unit replaced w/ and E unit and I no longer have the dreaded BSOD's anymore. It's going on 2 wks now and thing seem to be working great. Go ahead and contact E8 and have them ship the replacement unit and watcj wjat is on the 1 you have and be happy that you have a new correctly working unit. Sorry you will lose a few programs but sometimes thing like this happen at least they are willing to fix your problems.

Jim,

Have you tried to force a call out (menu, 6, 3, call out)? Sometimes that resets the modem back to its on hook state.

Jimg,

It may be worth a try, make sure your phone line is plugged into the phone jack and not the ethernet jack. They are next to each other and (as I found out) if misconnected, kills the phone line.

Easy test as I remmeber it from when everybody used modems for the Internet.

Unplug the modem cable. Run the test and as you hit select plug in the phone line. If the test then passes your modem is fried. It was a very common failure mode after a storm for the modem to nusy out the line. They would dial and connect but not hangup as that part was what the surge shorted out.

I finally got around to trying the forced call out trick and the modem is no longer off hook - thanks Bill R. That's the good news. However, I didn't check to see if the phone was off hook before I ran the forced call out so it could have been something else (new software download this week) that caused the modem to reset. Guess I wouldn't make a good QA engineer...
