I noticed in the installation tips that you should avoid HDMI because there are problems. I couldn't really find a current listing of existing problems with HDMI - is there a compiled list or something I could be pointed to? Is it still recommended to avoid HDMI, or have the issues been fixed?

Thank you from a guy anxiously awaiting his HR20 install.

A question along these lines... any opinion on the HDMI cables you can find on Amazon (and elsewhere online) for between $5-20? That's a huge difference from the $100+ cables I've seen in stores. Is the difference in quality as big, too?

I don't know if there is a compiled list here on the site or not. Since I never had any HDMI problems w/ my Panny's and the HR20 I didn't keep up with the problem to often.

In the early days of the HR20 there were HDMI compatabilities issues w/ the HR and some sets. Alot of folks had to run thru the initial setup w/ component cables first and then switch over to HDMI. IIRC there were some issues w/ some TV's not displaying 480i over HDMI or something like that.

Bottom line... I don't think it is as a big of a problem as it was in the past.

Post your TV model and maybe someone w/ the same model can comment on this.

Good luck.

For the most part... a 10-15 dollar HDMI cable is just as good as the 100 dollar version. Many say a digital signal is a digital signal, if the signal gets to the TV then you're good to go. Wether it's a 10 dollar cable or a 100 dollar cable.

monoprice.com has cost effective cable and work well. Many here have purchased from them including myself. You don't need to buy 100 monster cables IMHO.

I've been using HDMI successfully since my first HR20 in March, and the only issue I ever have with it is that when the HR20 reboots, my HDMI switcher won't display the boot-up "Please wait ..." screen. Other than that, everything's been great.

As HDTVsportsfan says, a lot may depend on your TV ...

Good to hear- hope that's the case! I'd prefer to use HDMI.

I've got a Mitsubishi DLP - WD-62725. I've been using HDMI on my HR10-250 and recently added a monoprice switcher, with no issues. It may be worth noting that I use HDMI for video only - I've got the HR10 audio connected via optical.

My only issues with HDMI have been with audio. I have both HDMI to stereo through my TV and a straight shot from my HR20 to my receiver using an optical cable. I notice that while listening through the optical cable, the sound will drop out as the TV is "booting up". I also have an issue with it passing a dolby digital signal reliably to the TV. Both of these issues seem to have been resolved with the latest CE.

Most Sammys don't do 480i, other than that I have not had any issues with HDMI. I may even upgrade my receiver to an HDMI ready unit

Thanks for the info. I just received a HR20-100s and noticed the drop outs (my Onkyo receiver actually "clicks" as it is switching between DD and PCM) when using the optical cable.

I should note that the "dropouts" occur during
trickplay (recorded or live);
entering a secondary menu (i.e. "Help")
and when the signal changes from 5.1 to 2.0 (commercials on HD channels)

What do you mean "won't do 480i?" So how are 480i SD signals handled on the Sammy's when connected via HDMI?

Sound dropouts in the transition from DD to PCM are a problem with your A/V receiver (or a problem with the station, depending on the way you look at it). When the DD 5.1 signal is interrupted to go to PCM, for a commercial or newsbreak, the digital "frame" is interrupted part way through and your A/V receiver handles the transition badly. Some A/V receivers don't have a problem with this. Additionally, many channels have moved away from PCM and are now using DD 2.0 and this is much less of a problem with most A/V receivers (although yours seems not to like the DD5.1 to DD2.0 transition either, I am not sure why.

So how do you watch SD programming? Do you have your HR-20 set up in native or another mode?

When I had the HDMI connected to my Samsung I had 480i unchecked and 480p checked. When landing on an SD channel the HR20 switched to 480p. Although this is not true native it was the only way to send a 480 signal via HDMI to the Samsung TV.

is it just me... or upscaling like this looks like crap?
