View Full Version : HR20 - Now if I only could get it installed...

A few weeks ago I ordered the HR20 to go with my current HR10-250. I was to get a new dish to replace my lnb3, multiswitch, and the receiver. (Actually the dish wasn't on the work order but when the installer called I got that cleared up. I hope!)

The install was scheduled for last Saturday afternoon. The weather was in the 90's with high humidity. I know, personally I wouldn't want to be out on a roof in that crap. As expected I get a call late morning with the installer saying he isn't feeling so hot from the super heat. Hey I am cool with that and I understand. Take it easy in this heat. Also my area doesn't have an HD locals or MPEG4 programiing yet, so I am not missing out too bad. My current setup is working. No hurry I am thinking.

He says he can come on Sunday morning? Hey...ok I am cool with that. He calls Sunday morning and said he went to the doctor from his heat exhaustion and they told him to stay out of the direct sun for a few days. He says he is only going to take that day off though. Again with the weather very hot and humid and me not getting too uptight about any small delay I am pretty cool with it. So the installer goes on to say he could come Monday. Unfortunately, I explain..although my job is somewhat flexible, I need to ask for time off. I want to be there and not let the Mrs. have to be the only one there when he is there. But he says Oh I don't expect you to miss work. I can come at 5PM on Tuesday. (Today). Cool. The weather is a lot cooler now also!

So this morning I get a call. He has tons of work orders and conflicts. He is installing in towns 20 minutes west of here and working east towards me. They have him scheduled for a lot of installs today! UGGGGG...Now I am starting to get a little frustrated. He says he doesn't know if he will get there by 5pm and if he can't get here early enough that he won't be able to activate the DVR because the activation center closes at 6pm. He wants to reschedule now for a morning time or maybe the weekend.

Ok I have had some patience and understanding but to now start getting pushed back even further I am getting concerned and somewhat frustrated. I told him he should be bumping someone else off and not me. He said he would see what he could do and call back later today. Not expecting anything to bet different. I probably get bumped.

I am glad I didn't NEED this upgrade now or anything because then I would really probably be getting upset over this. I just don't like the feeling I am getting.

Any thoughts, comments? Is this normal?

P.S When he was talking to me this morning he had to let me go and call me back because he was getting pulled over by the cops. When he called back he said they said he view was being obstructed by all the stuff he had loaded in his truck. Wow.. this keeps getting better.

markman07, you are a very kind and patient person. I hope this installer is not taking advantage of that kindness. With all of his issues you might end up being better off if he isn't the one doing your install.

The thing in you message that really made me go 'hmmm' was when he told you the "activation center" closes at 6pm. I can tell you for a fact that I activated my HR-20 well after 6pm. We bought ours at Best Buy and waited until our toddler went to bed (830 pm) to activate and get it going. I know of no restriction on time of day to complete activation of the reciever with D*. I suppose the issue could be with his employer sending the office people home at 6pm?? Just a guess. Good luck, hope it all works out.

That activation thing caught my ear also. I know you can activate a receiver using any CSR 24x7 /365. I thought maybe the installers use some other special / dedicated group who only work until 6pm. Technically couldn't the HR20 work with my current setup for the short term? I mean he could drop off the receiver and activate it whenever and do the dish at a later time if he wanted, right? Maybe I should call Directv's installation service number.

you can, but will not be able to receive the HD locals until the new dish is installed

Not a biggie since my market won't have HD locals until after the next satellite is up! But of course when the new national mpeg4 come out I need it for sure. But in any case I wish I wasn't getting this uneasy feeling about this whole thing.
