View Full Version : Anyone have any components sitting on top of their HR20?

I just bought a PS3 and the only place I can put it is on top of the HR20. It is blocking some of the vents and it seems like it gets hot. It was up to 138 degrees. Should I put some feet under the PS3 to raise it up?

I have a 2nd HR20 ontop of one HR20.

I would put something to maybe increase the gap between the HR20 and the PS3... you have two units there, generating a LOT of heat.

If it's an HR20-700 I'd put feet under it and under the PS3... if it's an HR20-100 I'd put feet under it, but there are no vents on the top of a -100.

Put the hotter of the two units on top.

Like Earl, I have one HR20 sitting atop another HR20, but I put water bottle caps under the legs of each HR20 to increase airflow.

(I originally only had one HR20, but when I added the second, the temp of the bottom HR20 rose 9°, even with the bottle caps.)

I have a targus chill mat on top of my HR20 and home theater center speaker on top of chill pad.

Have a dvd player on top of a -100, runs a cool 107 in a cabinet.

Have a small LCD TV on top of one of them :) (Yeah, I know, it's too small for my use, but it was free from a raffle. :))

Cheers,
Tom

I have my Slingbox Pro on top of my HR20. No noticeable issues from this placement.

Put a chill mat on top and you can stack anything on top of that.

I actually have my one of my HR20's then two H20's stacked on top of it and my slingbox on top of them. I know you should not do that but since they are in open space they get a little more air then being in a stand or a rack so I did it. They have been like that for months and I have not had one problem.

You "stackers" make my teeth hurt.:) (unless using the chill-pad trick).

You can do it. It's just a bad idea in the long term. Those vent slots are there for a reason and they can't do their job "properly" without a clear path for the air to move.

That said, I've not seen a credible report of a temperature caused failure in the HR20 since September of last year. (and there wasn't one then either, it's just when I started religiously reading these forums)

Some times my cat curls up on my HR20 for warmth.

With that in mind, does D* expect customers not to stack components on top of their flagship model? Seems kind of silly to me.

I agree 100%. If you stack the stuff, and it overheats and breaks something, should D* have to replace it since at least in my opinion, that should be considered misuse? It is a bad idea to stack components like that. What amazes me even more is some admitted they KNOW its a bad idea, but do it anyway

I'm gonna stick my HR20 between my 700-watt stereo receiver and a H20. If they overheat, I'll just hose them down!!

Remember to spray AWAY from the vent holes.

I am afraid that what I ever put on top of it would melt

Does the USB port on the HR power your mat?

You can make great toasted cheese sandwiches on top of an HR20.

I actually fried something letting it sit on top of the HR20. Problem is, I can't remember what. It was back in the fall. It was a DVD player or a VCR or something. It failed after sitting there for a week or two.

Yes. And I use both USB's for the one in the bedroom to power 2 chillmats. One for the unit and one for the receiver underneath.

This chill mat sounds like a neat idea. Have you done any temperature comparison tests on how effective it really is??

takes mine from the 127 constant to 106 and muffles the drive sound a bit because it covers the vents.

That sounds great. Do the fans on the Chill Mat make any noise?? I like to keep things as quiet as possible.

If you'll pardon my "temperature retentiveness", what is silly is stacking equipment that wasn't specifically designed to be stacked. Flagship model has nothing to do with it. I've got a beautiful HT theater receiver that if I stacked equipment on top of, would fry eggs.

Thermal design involves air slots...they are NOT supposed to be blocked (duh!) or have the convective air flow impeded.

Shirley, you must be kidding (and I didn't get the joke).:D

So, yes, D* does expect customers not to stack stuff on the HR20, and I believe there is a specific warning about doing so in the manual....just like 99% of all other consumer grade electronics that has top vent slots. Vent slots are quite compromised if the convective flow from them is inhibited.

I consider it a near miracle that Earl's stacked HR20s still work:rolleyes:

Then again, it hasn't even been a year, yet....

running fine for the last 6 months.. cabnet runs 90, hr20#1 runs 127, and hr20#2 runs 125

I don't hear the fans, but I like my 5.1 loud.

The temperature on my HR20 went from 127 to 109.

I don't stack anything on top of it--just as I wouldn't stack anything on top of the AV receiver. My only "stacking" is the DVD player on top of the VCR. Given how little I use the VCR, I'm not worried!

I have my Wii sitting horizontally on top of my HR20. It doesn't seem to be blocking any vents or anything.

Not really, the slight fan noise is drown out by the hard drive of the HR20:lol:

My HR20-700 has a Radio Shack (USB powered, $19) on its top (blowing air up).... used to run 135-degrees, now runs 100-degrees. My Hr20-100 runs 100 without exterior cooling (plus -100s have no venting on their tops).

My new 100s is installed behind a cabinet door that my wife likes to keep closed. It is very close to the top, and in fact I can feel the heat from the unit through the wooden bottom of the drawer above. I worry about the electronics.

I am thinking about getting a chill mat for underneath the 100 to dissipate the heat, although I understand there are no vents in the top of it.

Anyone doing this? Good idea or not?

I have my bedroom HR-20 sandwiched between two Yamaha's - a DVD player below and an A/V Receiver on top

It has fairly large feet and sits about an inch higher then the HR-20's roof

I don't know if it helps but the Receiver has vents both top and bottom so theoretically the air can still flow

FWIW the temps on my two HR-20's almost always both read 122 degrees - the living room one has nothing on top of it
