I am currently looking to get a DVR for my home and I was wondering if it would be best to get a DirecTv DVR powered by Tivo for my home, or just a DirecTV DVR. The reason I am interested in the one powered by Tivo is because it seems easier to mod. Are there any limitations of a DirecTv DVR powered by Tivo compared to a new DirecTV DVR that doesn't use Tivo?

The D* powered Tivos will not and can not receive any of the new channels upcomming in September. They are all broadcast in MPEG4 which can only be received by the D* H20/HR20 receivers.

Is it possible to find out which channels those will be?

All the HD channels.
Will I still be able to get all of the SD channels?
Will I still be able to get all of the SD channels? For the foreseeable future.
Mods for the non-TiVo SD equipment are virtually nonexistant.
Except for the external hard drive, that one is doable.

I have an HR10 in our RV with a 3sat dish, 101/119/110. Obviously I won't get the new channels on the new sats....but, will there be new MPEG4 on those original sats? if so, then I would go ahead and get an HR20 for the RV.
Thanks
Dan

You need the newer 5-LNB dish to receive the mpeg4 channels located on the 99 and 103 sats. The triple LNB dishes can only receive mpeg2 programming.
