View Full Version : OTA antenna attached to slimline dish?

I have an existing 3lnb dish with an OTA antenna attached for my HR10-250's.

I am getting a new 5lnb dish installed to use with the HR20, but I want to replace my current dish. (I don't want 2 of 'em on my house.)

It doesn't sound like my current OTA antenna will fit the new dish...is there one that will work?? And would a DTV installer have one he could give me (assuming I convince DTV that they need to do that?) It's just a very basic one that I have now, receives HD signals from one location about 15-20 miles away...no hills.

I'm not aware of any off-air antennas designed to mount on the 5-LNB dish. Those antennas tend to be rather poor anyway. But if yours is working fine, just have the installer leave the 3-LNB dish plus antenna in its place and mount the 5-LNB dish somewhere else. The installer will need to run new cables anyway because you cannot combine (diplex) the off-air antenna with the new 5-LNB dish cables.

Will the new SWM allow you to diplex OTA?

I don't think you can, at least not between the dish and the SWM. I think you can with the SWM outputs to your TV/Receiver, though.

Duhhh....kinda obvious workaround. Remove the old dish...leave the old post with the OTA antenna attached. Install new dish next to it.

I had the same antenna that kinda wrapped around the 3LNB dish and clamped on to it's back. Is that the kind you have? If so, and you take responsibility and care - it's quite flexible. Just shape it very slowly with your hands and it'll go on your Slimline with no trouble. I did an install and was able to save their OTA in just this way. :)

mdh333 - Is that really appropriate? They're trying to help you with YOUR question.

Note: I re-read it and I'm hoping you're talking about the Installers but even then, it's not very appropriate.

Sorry if folks thought my reply was offensive...I was referring to myself for not thinking of the workaround. I'm happy with the new dish on one pole, and the antenna on the other.

btw - "slimline" is a pretty dumb name for a dish that's probably 50% larger than any of the previous ones.
