I'm not up on this tech stuff yet. What does MPEG2 and MPEG4 mean? whats the difference? I was reading about how Dish will contact people to upgrade their recivers to MPEG4, I have a regular receiver and a vip211, will I have to upgrade these?
Thanx in advance!

I am not a techie, so I will give you a very basic answer. MPEG2 & MPEG4 are different ways of compressing the signals that are sent to your receiver. MPEG4 is supposed to be a more efficient way of doing it. The older receivers can only handle MPEG2 signals, while the new receivers can handle both. The VIP211 is an MPEG4 receiver and does not have to be upgraded.

So this sounds like our two old receivers will have to be upgraded sooner than we thought anyway.

At this point Dish only has a handful of MPEG4 receivers.
411
ViP211
ViP622
ViP222
More coming in the future... but if you have any other receivers, they are not MPEG4 compatible.
