View Full Version : HDMI output on VIP 211 dead - Help please
Hi,
My VIP 211 HDMI output died all of a sudden. We had a thunder storm and it stopped working after. I have surge protection though so it wasn't that.
Audio is fine but HDMI video is dead. I haven't tried component but regular RCA video works.
What can I try? I already tried hard reboots.

I'm afraid there isn't anything you can do except replace the receiver unless you're technically inclined enough to open the box up and see if there is something burnt that you can replace.

I would try the Component connection. They are just as good, if not better than HDMI and less problematic. If they work, no prob. Your assumption that the surge protector protected your equipment is not valid. Except for the most expensive surge protectors ($500 and up) most don't do a very good job of protecting equipment and to qualify that I have lost several computers to surges that were connected to what I thought were good protectors. A battery backup device is much better as the battery absorbs the surge totally. The battery can be replaced if damaged thus saving your equipment.
ok, thanks guys
I'm gonna try component.

If it is leased, then can't you just send it back to E* for a new one?
As long as you are trying things, try plugging the 211 into another set with a HDMI connection, and plug some other HDMI source into your TV. I see nothing in what you have posted that would point to the receiver as being the problem, rather than the TV it is plugged into being the problem.
Sure, it COULD be the 211 but there are lots of possibilities. When you say audio is fine, have you removed all RCA audio cables from the receiver to the TV? If the receiver can't negotiate a HDMI connection, it will default to a DVI (video only) connection. When my TV has DVI instead of HDMI on that input, it routes RCA audio - I'd have your symptoms if HDMI/DVI was zapped entirely. If the TV truely is giving you audio via the HDMI connection, it would seem more likely that the TV's internal setup for display of the HDMI/DVI signal is what is wrong.
Also, don't count any audio going to your A/V receiver via TOSLink as "HDMI works for audio".

Not generally true for consumer UPSes. The cheap to somewhat expensive ones are either offline or line-interactive.
Offline converters don't run on battery, or use the battery inverter, unless the power fails. They then transfer very quickly (< 1/2 AC cycle) to battery.
Line-interactive is better, but still provides power from the line until a power failure. Surges are much better controlled that with a simple offline converter. Some of the mid-range APC UPSes are line-interactive.
For true isolation, you need an online or double-conversion UPS... these are always 'on battery', which is kept charged by the power line. They are also the most expensive.
However, the surge protection and filtering in even cheap UPSes is generally much better than what you'll get in a surge protector, especially a cheap one.
well, component doesn't work either :(
says a similar message on my Samsung TV of "no signal" or "non supported mode"
DVD player works through HDMI so it's not the TV
I bought this receiver exactly a year ago...damn I paid a lot of money too :(
what can I do? If I sign up for this "protection plan" will this be covered?
