I have a dish6000, and when I had it installed I made sure I had
two connections over by that box because I planned to hook
up a dishpvr to the other connection.

Since I don't much care about being able to record hdtv channels
right now, I was thinking of hooking a 508 or 721 (just for nicer
interface and more capacity) as the main box there, and use
the 6000 only when I want to watch hdtv. (the second connection isn't hooked up to the hd feed, anyway).

My question is about the remotes - do the 6000 and 508/721 respond to the same IR codes? this would be a problem for me as I use a nice hometheatermaster universal remote and I'd want ot be able to independently control the two boxes.

Apparently changing the remote address (see your manual or do a search in the forums for procedure) changes both the UHF and IR codes. So I would think if you can control two sats with your universal, you'd be fine.

I'm comparing with a 3900 (IR only) and a 501 (UHF/IR, and is the same as a 508 except hard drive capacity).

How many codes does your remote have for Echostar sat boxes? I'm assuming that each code for the universal would correspond to a different remote address. I'm using OEM remotes, though, so I can't be sure.

Dig out your codes, change the remote address on the receiver, and try to get a matching code to work in the remote. That would tell you for sure.

Ah, thanks - I thought I could only change the RF codes (not the
IR codes).

My remote is completely programmable, so I can just set up a new
screen for the PVR and capture the codes. (heck, i can even set
it up so when I click the "HBO-HD" button it automatically switches
off the pvr, switches on the 6000, changes to the appropriate
channel, and switches my tv's source and the switches the audio
on receiver to the appropriate source - it's a pretty neat remote :)

Once I get a new box I'll let everyone know if it works.
