I think you'll find many folks here with DirecTV and Cable, myself included. Why do you ask?
i cannot even get cable where I live, the company refuses to run the lines in my community back to my area so I was forced to go with satellite, and it was the best thing that could possibly happen. I would have never know the reatness of DBV compared to crapcast I had in New Jersey. It would be nice though to have cable internet over DSL though(i had to fight to get that..and i won with a 6 meg connection). I like bandwidth and am jealous of some of those places that have FTTH internet(other than FiOS) with 100meg Down/Upstream.

I have both, I can get some HD channels on one that I can’t get on the other hence the reason for having both. The downside is that this HD habit can get expensive. :)

I ask because I was thinking about going with the Cablevision triple play in addition to Directv for the additonal HD channel (for now, hopefully)

Note that the triple play price does not include the cost to rent the boxes($10/month per box charge for HD DVR) and remotes(about a $1), you also have to pay extra for something thay call "the IO package" ($10/month) to get access to the digital channels and VOD. The triple play price is deceiving.
On the plus side, Cablevision does have a decent HD lineup and nice VOD offerings including Howard TV. I've been considering adding them myself if not for my prior bad experiences with their customer service.
Anyone have both Directv and cable?
Yes. I have the cheapest cable package because I can get some local channels on it that I can't get with D*, and it also provides a backup for network programming in case something goes wrong with the satellite.

I have both because DirecTV doesn't give me my Philadelphia local channels, but cable does.
DirecTV just gives me New York locals which do not cover my area at all (I'm 80+ miles away from NY).
Philadelphia TV gives my area local news, sports and weather, nobody anywhere near here watches NY TV news.

Cable free for almost a decade.
Between Sat and 28 local digital channels, why use cable?

I use to have both but my local cable company has upped its basic package from 7.00 a month to 25.00 so it doesn't make economic sense to use both.

I have both (DirecTV and Comcast) because I don't get Philadelphia RSN (Comcast Sportsnet) via DTV. It sucks, but I like the Phillies and Flyers. Also, Comcast OnDemand is watched by my kids, my internet is with cable. Phone with Verizon (discount on DTV and Verizon).

I have both DirecTV 3 HR20's and 2 regular DirecTV Tivo's and Comcast I just change inputs and I have Replay TV 5160 for Comcast it only tapes 1 show at a time and it's not HD but this way I get to watch all the Philadelphia sports because Comcast totally monopolizes sports here in Philly they own both the Flyer's and the Sixers. So once I got the cable modem for my computer I just added in Comcast basic cable it is nice having both of them. Plus during Football Season Picture in Picture works great because of having both Directv and Comcast.
DTV and Comcast limited basic for HD locals.

I've been cable-free since Jan. 2000, so 7 and a half years. When I first got DIRECTV, I returned the stb to Time-Warner Cable, but held onto lifeline. In the summer of 1999 I called TWC about a RoadRunner special they were running to see if I would qualify and the CSR said I would. Less than a minute after hanging up, the phone rang and it was the TWC CSR telling me she'd made a mistake and that because I was lifeline I'd have to pay 2x what a standard cable customer would for install and service. I liked Paragon Cable, who'd serviced my area before TWC coming along in 1996, but found TWC to be a PITA. I felt good about canceling.
A TWC rep came to my door in the Spring of 2006 with a pretty sweet offer, but the reason I turned them down was they're unable to deliver CBS and FOX in HD. If I'm going to give up NFL-ST, I'd require at least that. I have waivers for both channels with DIRECTV and I had an outdoor antenna installed last month so I can get NBC and PBS HD. I have Verizon DSL, but if I want cable broadband, I can get it through Earthlink. Fact is, I'd be more likely to migrate to FIOS if it ever came to my area than cable.

I had both cable and DirecTV for about a week in Feb of 2006. I had digital cable installed only on my bedroom HDTV and kept DirecTV to make sure I really wanted to go back with Time Warner. Less than a week later I had TW back out here to hook up the living room TV and then canceled DirecTV. It was fun doing the A/B comparison and seeing how crappy DirecTV picture quality was.
BTW – Earthlink Cable is just rebranded Road Runner. Same lines, same speeds, if there’s network issues, they’re present too. You’re bill is even sent from Time Warner. Earthlink Cable is pointless and a completely stupid idea unless you don’t have cable TV you can maybe save a whole $2 or $3 a month. And what’s worse you can only get standard RR, no Turbo. I couldn’t imagine having only 10Mb broadband. There have been a lot of complaint post on DSLReports that if you have problems, Earthlink blames TW and TW blames Earthlink. I was stupid once and looked into Earthlink Cable, their database is based on phone numbers. TW is my cable company, but my phone number is from a few towns over where Adelphia was the cable provider, so no Earthlink Cable in that area. Earthlink didn’t understand this concept and said I was unserviceable. Idiots! Besides after thing about it, Time Warner is where the service actually comes from, I’d rather pay them then save a dollar and pay some middleman. If it wasn't for these rebranding deals, Earthlink would have be out of business.

steve: i have both directv and timewarner cable, dtv wont give me any of my locals in hd from columbus ohio, so they give me cbs and fox hd from new york, my wavier was shot down for the rest of the hd locals from new york or whatever, the sd locals they give is crappy looking as you stated, and its funny time warner gives me all my locals in hd from columbus ohio, plus i get alot of hd national channels from time warner, that directv charges 9.99 a month for, included in my package, at no additional cost, and i have the series 3 hd tivo which really rocks and rolls with cable cards, they dont double charge you for channels that you have in sd, that you are all ready subscribed to get the national ones in hd. and you cant tell the folks at dtv that timewarner doesnt charge you for the national hd channels, but they have there opionion and i have my opionon and i am just a pion
I had both Charter HD and DTV at the same time for about 3 months. Checked out the Moxi HD DVR from Charter and it stunk. Could only record 8 hours of HD and and the GUI was terrible. DTV's PQ was substantially better than Charter's HD and SD. Charter did have Cinemax and Starz HD so I enjoyed that, but hopefully we will have both of those very soon. I kept the very basic 13 channel cable thinking I wanted a backup in case of a rain fade problem, but only used it once, in the last six months so I cancelled Charter this month. I won't miss it at all. Well, I'll take that back, this fall I'll miss watching the replay's of the local HS football team on the local access channel, but it certainly isn't worth $17/mo just for that.

Have not had cable in years, I've had D* since the beginning and got rid of cable at that same time. And have never looked back.
